I cannot figure out how to put the lower unit back to the motor after I
have removed the lower-unit to check the impeller. I inserted the drive-shaft back to the hole and lined up the bolt; but I could not put the lower unit all the way; something got stuck, and I ended up getting a 1" gap that I could not close. I kept rotating the drive shaft hoping that this might help the driveshaft to get on gear; but that didn't help. At one point, I managed to get the gap to close to 1/2" after spinning the driveshaft; but subsequent attempts of spinning the driveshaft didn't help. By the way, the gear was at neutral if this matters. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any help. Jay Chan |

1- if you check the impeller-replace it!

I forgot to check the shift-shaft. I re-read the SELOC repair manual,
and indeed it mentions about the shift shafe in relation to installing the lower unit. Unfortunately, it doesn't say where it is and how to adjust it. I think I will have to order a service manual from Mercury to know exactly where everything is. Thanks for the pointer. Yes, I intended to replace the impeller and the gaskets. But then I
encountered some problem and needed to put this off for a while, and I need to put the lower-unit back to the way it was. I probably need to replace it soon or in next spring when I bring the motor to a mechanic. I will need to order a service manual from Mercury. I cannot find the necessary info from the repair manual by SELOC. Thanks for the suggestion. I will need to buy a service manual in order to figure out the right shift rod position is supposed to be. If you said what type drive you have, I overlooked it. If it's the same as mine, this should help: http://www.mercstuff.com/waterpumpinst.htm The illustrations are right out of the Merc service manual. Prior to reinstalling, the shift lever in the boat is in full forward and the shift shaft on the LU is rotated full clockwise. An appropriately sized 12 point socket on a nut driver handle makes a good tool for rotating the shift shaft. The shifter has to be held in position by holding a little pressure on the prop shaft in the reverse direction, which is best done by a helper. The LU should go in far enough to start the nuts on the studs before you meet any serious resistance. The last half inch or so can be tight, but you should be able to wiggle it into place by hand. You can draw it together by tightening the nuts, but if you do it that way and it doesn't draw together smoothly and easily, something's wrong and you need to back off and start over. |

I have ordered a copy of Mercury Service Manual from Mercury web site. Hopefully, I will fully understand what you said when I cross-reference your instruction with the service manual. Mine is a 1995 Mercury 115hp Outboard (2-stroke, 4-cylinders). Better stick with your outboard service manual and ignore my sterndrive info then. |
