LOL! another Ebay "response" scam!
So I lsot a boat auction, and never fails, here comes the
scam/spoofers. I just got a "Response from Ebay Member" letter, asking me for more photos of my auction. funny, I've never auctioned off anything. and over in the right hand column i get this: "Isthis message an offer to buy your item directly through email withoutwinning the item on eBay? If so, please he! lp make the eBay marketplacesafer by reporting it to us. These "outside of eBay" transactions maybe unsafe and are against eBay policy...." They type worse than I do! So I sent it to . and Ebay or Safeharbor will send me their usual "we're on it!" type of letter. amazing market place. |
LOL! another Ebay "response" scam!
I get at least 3 of those per day. I also get the one from "paypal" saying
that another email has beed added to the account...please verify. You may know this, but many don't... When you get anything suspicious, hover your mouse over the link they want you to click, and look in the bottom left corner (outlook express). If the url shows anything but the outfit they claim to represent, it's a scam. --Mike wrote in message oups.com... So I lsot a boat auction, and never fails, here comes the scam/spoofers. So I lsot a boat auction, and never fails, here comes the scam/spoofers. This has happened to me a few times in the past, but the last time I put in a bid on an Ebay item I got deluged. The basic idea was an email on the Ebay format saying the even though I "lost" the auction, the winner had failed to complete the deal so now I had a chance to buy it at my price. Unfortunately for them, it's easy to pull up the auction page and send an email to the guy who was actually auctioning a boat, and find out if it's true. Wasn't (of course). I just got a "Response from Ebay Member" letter, asking me for more photos of my auction. funny, I've never auctioned off anything. and over in the right hand column i get this: "Isthis message an offer to buy your item directly through email withoutwinning the item on eBay? The ones I get are copied from the Ebay format, complete with the same graphics & colors. So I sent it to . and Ebay or Safeharbor will send me their usual "we're on it!" type of letter. amazing market place. This kind of thing will ruin it. It's a PITA to get deluged with phishing attempts because you try to buy something. The heck with Iraq, Iran, North Korea, can we nuke whatever city it is the stupid scam-baiters live in? mgg wrote: I get at least 3 of those per day. There aren't any "auctions" anymore unless it's complete junk from somebodies garage - it's all "buy it now" and just another online store - overpriced to boot what with all the "shipping and handling" charges, scams and everything else that's been going on. eBay is a joke. 'Craigslist' has worked well for me. |

I only get them to my sellers account if my email addy was in the ad - or if the phish came through the official ebay emails. I totally disagree that Ebay is being hacked. If you browser is showing the lock on that web site then that means that the
all the exchanges between you and the web site are encrypted. It is not a completely foolproof encryption but nobody outside of places like nsa have got the computer horsepower to break it. Plus they would have to intercept your actual traffic to even begin and the comm companies have got the major routing nodes and lines pretty well locked down. You do have some vulnerability in that you are assuming that the other party has taken the effort to secure their site and servers. This is not likely to be a problem with big companies like amazon, ebay, walmart, etc. But mom and pop operations that have decided to do their own servers may not be so good. Usually you can tell if the store is doing their own thing or buying web services form a big web server shop. I once received an invitation to list our vacation rental propery on a new site for free. I went to it and signed up to get an account. After I snooped around a while I realized that they had left access to their vacation site user id/password file open on their server. There along with everyone else was my new id and password to get on their site. I downloaded it and emailed them a copy suggesting they clean it up. "Eisboch" wrote in message ... Eisboch I think your legal liability for a stolen credit card is $50, but I don 't believe any of the major credit card companies actually hold you responsible for the $50. I had someone write $2700 of credit card "checks" to pay off another credit card (which was probably a stolen credit card), and they immediately wrote off the total amount. I also had a $8000 card appear on my card, from Turkey. They wrote that off without any questions. I had Citibank Security call one day because someone in a town close by had made 7 charges at the exact same gas station during a one hour period. I told them they were not mine, and they wrote all of them off. All of these charges occurred in the same month, so somehow someone got my credit card number and was using it. I immediately purchased a shredder and shred anything with any personal info on it. Since I started using the shredder, I have not had any problems. According to the credit card company, trash hopping is a common way to get credit card numbers and is much easier than cracking a secure web site. |

It's not a huge issue, but more of a pain. My prior experiences of trying various monitoring and protection software like Norton and others were that they bogged the computer down sometimes and were constantly requiring you to upgrade, download, or something. The problem with just saying "Norton" is that there's more than one product. The suite is a resource pig. The straight AV product is pretty lean. And, if you are more than slightly aware of its maintenance needs, you've probably messed with the settings. When it's set up right, it updates itself in the background. At most, you'll sometimes see a brief message saying "I just updated and all is cool". Combine this with the free version of ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com), and your machine is solid. You will not notice the minimal resource usage. There's one more reason why some users think their machines are being "bogged down". You need to turn OFF email monitoring in Norton. It's redundant, because if you open an email and try to run or save an attachment, THAT is when it gets scanned a 2nd time. Inbound scanning would be the first time, but there's no reason to do it. It definitely slows down Outlook Express, Outlook, and the Mozilla products. |

Best time to start is when you do a clean windows install. Then check it as
you add your software. I only have 2 things in mine - both for my Nvidia card. When I do a ctrl/alt/delete and click "processes" I only have 24 running - including the printer stuff. How about YOU??? Heh... -W "Eisboch" wrote in message ... "Clams Canino" wrote in message ink.net... Start Run Regedit Look under: Hkey_ Local_ Machine Software MicrosoftWindowsRun Get to know what's in there (runs at startup) so you can tell if something gets added. Most new crap will hide THERE, not in the statup folder of your start-menu . -W Holy Crap! I just looked at that on this computer (not the one with the problem). How would you possibly know if something new was added? There must be a ga-zillion files there. Eisboch |

It's not a matter of "if", but a matter of "when". The worst offenders are people who, for various reasons, have no protection on their machines. Well, it's worked for me for over 10 years now... so if ONE finally gets through... I'll deal with it. :) -W |
