I said LOOK - Don't edit. Unless you're SURE your editing out mal-ware.

Be careful when editing the registry. Before you do make a new restore
point using "System Restore".

Sorry, I did not mean to infer that you were advising him to edit.

The oldest files in My Documents folder go back to the mid 80's and were
created on a 10 meg hard disk. :))

Best time to start is when you do a clean windows install. Then check it
as
you add your software.

I only have 2 things in mine - both for my Nvidia card. When I do a
ctrl/alt/delete and click
"processes" I only have 24 running - including the printer stuff. How
about
YOU??? Heh...

Start Run Regedit

Look under: Hkey_ Local_ Machine Software MicrosoftWindowsRun

Get to know what's in there (runs at startup) so you can tell if

something
gets added.
Most new crap will hide THERE, not in the statup folder of your
start-menu
.

-W

Holy Crap! I just looked at that on this computer (not the one with the
problem).
How would you possibly know if something new was added? There must be a
ga-zillion files there.

Eisboch

Clams ... at first I didn't follow your instructions correctly, but I now
see that once you get down to the "run" there isn't that many items to look
at. When I get home I'll check the other computer and see if there is
anything funny looking in there.

You guys are pushing my small envelope of computer knowledge. I was
thinking that if I found something strange, I would edit one word in the
file ... add a letter or something .... and then see if the problem went
away. If not ... I could go back and remove the added letter.

But ... maybe I better let someone who knows what they are doing do it.

I had an old 486 computer running Windows 3.1 that I had not used for years.
I started playing with it... seeing how many files in the Windows directory
I could delete and still have the computer run. Kinda like playing computer
roulette.
I made it quite a ways before it gave up.

You can do that... just run system restore FIRST (before you start playing)
to save your "pre-state".

Better yet..... write down EVERTHING that starts under "run" and do a
web-search on it.

That bad ones ARE known and will appear.

You are making this SO difficult for yourself.

Go he
www.securitytango.com

The site's run by 3 guys who have been handling problems like this since
forever. Read the page, then on the left, click "Let's Dance". You could
follow all the instructions completely, or just read and find the link to
the free virus scan - I don't recall its name, but it's there. These guys
have helped thousands of listeners via their radio show. One guy's the
network admin for the University of Rochester, and another's been building,
selling and servicing machines for many years. The 3rd guy - I dunno what he
does. Their suggestions are all 100% dependable.

I was wondering about keystroke loggers. I don't recall, but it might've
been Eisboch who said he had no need for a firewall that monitored
outbound nasties because he'd never been infected with anything nasty.

Yet.

Yup. That was me. And 4 days after I said it my computer at home picked up
some kind of spyware thing. I keep getting pop-ups trying to sell me
everything from cars to vacations to dates with beautiful, single women.
It's not porn crap or anything ... just annoying junk. I went to
Microsofts's Security Website and did an on-line scan and fix doober. It
found and corrected a worm, but there was one file it said it could not fix.
The computer ran ok for a while, then the stupid pop-ups started all over
again. I adjusted the pop-up blocker to prevent *any* pop-ups, but they
still come through.

I'll take it to a computer shop and let them clean it up.

I had a similar worm at work, and it was a bitch, because it reinstalls
itself every time you reboot. It started in the receptionist's
computer and worked it's way into the Network.

Spybot, Windows Defender or AdAware were not ability to delete the worm.
Our contracted computer "experts", tried for a month to get rid of the
worm without success.

I used HiJackThis and the experts at
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ to determine what was causing the
problem and how to correct it.

I found an unusual file in the start up directory. It was a legitimate
Windows file name, but was really the worm. The exe file would credit a
random and different exe file every time it would start up. In the
receptionist's computer It had created so many new files that there was
over 3000 processes running in the background.

I had to start up in the safe mode manually delete the file and the
start up lines in the registry. Hopefully your computer shop will spend
the time to verify each and every item involved in the windows start up
to make sure the file is actually a legitimate file.

I used HiJackThis

http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3...-10379544.html

to review the registry for start up items and any other methods used by
spyware to take over your computer.

"HijackThis lists the contents of key areas of the Registry and hard
drive--areas that are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers.
The program is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It
does not target specific programs and URLs, only the methods used by
hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives
are imminent, and unless you're sure about what you're doing, you always
should consult with knowledgable folks before deleting anything. "

transactions maybe unsafe and are against eBay policy...."

their usual "we're on it!" type of letter.

amazing market place.

Are they selling any Cherokees that aren't "rated" for stalls and
rolls???
