Start Run Regedit

Look under: Hkey_ Local_ Machine Software MicrosoftWindowsRun

Get to know what's in there (runs at startup) so you can tell if
something
gets added.
Most new crap will hide THERE, not in the statup folder of your
start-menu
.

Holy Crap! I just looked at that on this computer (not the one with the
problem).
How would you possibly know if something new was added? There must be a
ga-zillion files there.

Eisboch

Be careful when editing the registry. Before you do make a new restore
point using "System Restore".

Best time to start is when you do a clean windows install. Then check it as
you add your software.

I only have 2 things in mine - both for my Nvidia card. When I do a
ctrl/alt/delete and click
"processes" I only have 24 running - including the printer stuff. How about
YOU??? Heh...

Pen. Paper. Restrict other users from installing anything without the admin
approving it. That would be you, maybe.

Your policy will work well until someone you know sends you an infected

..doc
file. It happens all the time. It's not a matter of "if", but a matter of
"when". The worst offenders are people who, for various reasons, have no
protection on their machines.

Well, it's worked for me for over 10 years now... so if ONE finally gets
through... I'll deal with it. :)

Maybe. Or it will deal with you. Tell me about your backup strategy.

I have 4 systems networked... all docs and picks and music backed up on each
D: drive - not C:

Plus an off-site backup on my NH machine. And that's not counting old hard
drives laying around.

2 mahchines in the house, one in the shop, one in the pool cabana, one 1000
miles away in NH.

None safe from fire... but unlikely to lose more than one or two machines in
any single incident.
