Default Stupidity is Contagious

It filters right down from the upper echelons of the guvmint, apparently.

This should be interesting. The article includes maps showing proposed
training zones. If you look at the maps and still think this plan is a good
one, please be quiet. You are not familiar with the areas in question.

U.S. Coast Guard Proposes Using Great Lakes as Firing Range
Gunfire Exercises Endanger Public and the Environment

The United States Coast Guard, Ninth District, is proposing to conduct
live fire training throughout the Great Lakes. Great Lakes United has
serious concerns that gunfire exercises on the Great Lakes will put the
safety of the public and the environment at risk, and urges comment into
this serious issue. Please note: this alert does not question whether
Coast Guard personnel should be trained to handle weapons, rather whether
significant portions of the Great Lakes should be designated for live
fire military training.

Background:
The Ninth Coast Guard District is proposing the establishment of 34 live
fire safety zones throughout the Great Lakes, covering a combined total
of 2,376 square miles or 2.5% of the Lakes surface area. The safety
zones will be used to train Coast Guard personnel in maritime law
enforcement, national defense and homeland security using live 7.62mm
NATO rounds fired from lightweight automatic weapons. The proposed zones
would be permanent, and at this time are proposed for use "a few times in
a calendar year. with each exercise lasting approximately 4-6 hours". The
Coast Guard plans to alert the public in advance of all live gunfire
exercises through broadcasts on a marine band radio channel which is used
for distress, weather updates and marine information; they will also
employ an observer to monitor the safety zone throughout the exercise.
The Coast Guard also states that two independent environmental consulting
companies have determined that the use of live weapons on the Great Lakes
will present "no elevated risk to humans or the environment".

You can view maps identifying the location of the live fire safety zones:
4 zones in Lake Erie at: http://piersystem.com/go/doc/443/131148/
3 zones in Lake Ontario at: http://piersystem.com/go/doc/443/131143/

Yeah, right. You are just going to put something like this on a
newsgroup posting and tell everyone who disagrees with YOUR obviously
superior intellect to just shut up. I imagine you can kiss a lot of
people's asses. I think I trust the Coast Guard to know the Great
Lakes better than I trust you.

There are designated firing areas on Lake Erie for pistol and rifle firing
by the National Guard at Camp Perry (largest firing range in the world
http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...camp-perry.htm ). The area
is well marked and warnings are posted on the marine radio when live firing
is being conducted. I am not aware of any problems to boaters due to the
live fire activity.

As the zones will be permanent I suspect that the USCG will operate with the
same, if not more stringent cautions and restrictions.

;-)

So they're going to give us a clear definition of the areas involved and use
their existing practices of notifying mariners well in advance. Sounds like
a good plan. The charting companies will be able to update their materials
so anyone planning a route can double-check for any planned actions.

If all you want to do is whinge about gov't activities you can probably a)
find better newsgroups for it and b) find something a lot more "stupid" than
this otherwise reasonable sounding plan.

Unfortunately, the area designated near Rochester is A-1 trout fishing
territory. This plan will run into trouble. As I said before, if you have no

Where else are they going to get their on the water live fire training?
You do what the Coast Guardsmen to be able to hit the targerts they are
shooting at when it really counts don't you. Well, you have to make it a

1) On Lake Ontario, the areas have been placed in 3 of the busiest boating
lanes.

2) Guns which are attached to the boat must be practiced with on the water.
These are not the weapons mentioned in the article.

In the Chesapeake and along the Virginia Capes there are quite a few
areas that are set aside for military training. The are marked on the
charts and are cleared before any of the bombing or shooting occurs.

Fact of life now, just deal with it.

What weapons is the CG mounting on their small craft interdiction boats
these days. 40mm? 20mm? 50Cal.? 7.62?
