"It also details how Mineo managed to put two helicopter turbine engines into the boat, giving it a top speed of more than 165 mph" I've been on the Hudson River during the annual "River Poker Run" where these idiots with Eliminators, Fountains and custom made 30/40 footers and they ain't just putt - putting along. Some of those boats are doing 120/130 easy. At that speed, anything can happen - in particular when there are two boats racing to get somewhere in a hurry. Yep, and they may not have been riding at dangerous speeds if it were not for the alcohol. I've seen enough of these aholes in action also. |

Funny thing is that speed is of no advantage for a "Poker Run." The last
boat to arrive can still win the pot...there's no need for a turbine powered boat running at 100mph. --Mike " JimH" not telling you @ pffftt.com wrote in message . .. I'm no expert on poker runs but I've heard that the *real* event is all about finishing first in a thinly disguised race, and that winning the "pot" is a public relations after thought. |

Good Gawd!, WTD do you go with a boat that does 165 on the water? Don't airplanes take off and fly in the air at less speed than that?? |

Well ****, why tolerate a " thinly disguised race" ?? Why not just *HAVE* a race, a real race, with official safety stuff, and lanes, and all the fixings ? This is sad story. Insurance companies and lawers are gonna have a hay-day with this one I'll bet. Something tells be these were $20K boats either. Interesting to note that most of the folks were up there in age - over 50 etc. (not that there's any thing wrong with this, but just noteworthy) Sad. |

Wayne,
You very well could be right. It actually sounds like a fun event. I believe there is an annual one near me on the SF bay delta. If it *is* a race though, I'll stay out of it. It's nuts enough in those narrow sloughs when there *isn't* a race. --Mike "Wayne.B" wrote in message news ![]() On Tue, 05 Sep 2006 02:38:03 GMT, "MGG" wrote: Funny thing is that speed is of no advantage for a "Poker Run." A race requires too many permits and approvals. Calling it a "Poker Run" allows the whole thing to operate under the guise of a charity event. |
