The thing that I didn't understand when I first posted here -- and that some
who hang out here might not understand either -- is how very differently
newsgroup etiquette can be defined from group to group. I have spent most
of my newsgroup time (off and on for more than 10 years) in groups where
mysterious subject lines are commonplace and not frowned upon at all.
Obviously, I posted my question here because I thought it the best place to
find people who might know the answer.

Perhaps one reason this group is a slug is the way innocently misstepping
newcomers are treated.

Happy paddling, folks...

Lighten up. Ms. V. Laugh it off.

You weren't scorned or cussed out; you were just mildly rebuked for a
behavior that has irritated me whenever I have encountered it, in any
forum, in 20 years of Usenet. I mean, there is, you know, a reason it
is called the "subject" line in most newsreaders (and mail readers, and
message boards). It's just simple courtesy to use the "subject" line
to state the subject. Less rude now than it was when we aspired to
1024-bps modems, of course, but I still feel little need to read
messages for which I have no response or no interest.

How was CT CBoater to know you were a newcomer and not a lurker or
infrequent poster? And how was he to know you would be so thin skinned
about a mild rebuke?

Smile. Say "cheese". It's just not that bad.
