I am not a big fan of special days the Greeting Card Company's made up,
including Valentines Day and Sweetest Day, but miss Valentines Day and you
may be in hot water.

My wife and I have been married 24 years (come August) and I do not need
these holidays to show her how much I love her....I try to do it everyday.
However I did get her a card and some chocolate covered pretzels (her
favorite) and I got a big hug and kiss for doing so.

Time to confess..........did you remember (if so, what did you get her),
forget or just blow it off (and what was her reaction)?

Dinner and two dozen roses ( picture on abpso). I hate valentines day. I
wish everyone a happy vd experience. The name should be changed to Hallmark
Day.

But...you gotta live with her.

While at COSTCO getting the van's oil changed, I picked up two bouquets
of flowers...one for the wife and one for mom.

Here's a bit of trivia you might particularly enjoy. The greeting card
companies did not "make up" Valentines Day, and the original Valentinus
was a Christian priest who was later declared a saint by the church.

Back in the waning days of the Roman empire, one of the emperors
actually forbid young men and women to marry. The young men were
expected to serve in the army, travelling north to do battle with the
Germanic tribes. The unmarried (and therefore at least "officially"
virgin) young girls were awarded as prizes to soldiers who had served
with particular valor.

Each year in mid-February, the emperor would decree that all the names
of the unmarried young virgins should be wruitten on slips of paper and
put into a box. Soldiers returning from the front were allowed to draw
a name at random from the box, and would then be awarded the
companionship and sexual services of the young virgin for the following
year. While there was always the risk of some poor guy drawing the ugly
fat chick who talked too much, in a male dominated society like Rome
the young women probably got the worst of the bargain. The soldier
could simply walk away from a bad match, but the young woman had no
such option.

The Christian priest Valentinus openly defied the edict that forbid
young people to marry.
Valentinus would marry any young couple that asked him to do so- and
this of course diminished the supply of unmarried young women who could
be passed out to his legionaires.

Valentinus was arrested, and as a show of authority the emperor ordered
him executed on the day the names of virgins were drawn from the box-
February 14.

The "love notes" that get passed around on February 14 are St
Valentine's revenge.
Instead of men and women being forcibly coupled by the state with notes
drawn at random on February 14, they now send each other notes and
voluntarily pledge to love one another other for the following year, or
beyond.

By the way, I got my wife about 15 pounds of pot for Valentine's Day

on Feb 13th, pick out a card for each other, hand it to the other person,
have a laugh and a hug and put the card back on the shelf and leave. This
has been a source of laughs for about 25 years now! With the money we save
we go out to eat somewhere nice!

She got me a nice card and a cute Hallmark Teddy Bear.

I got her two $.39 chocolates as I was checking out with a couple
bottles of Linderman's Merlot.

To my credit, I paid all the property tax, all the property insurance,
all the health insurance, all the utilities, all the maintenance
costs, contributed 90% of the labor to maintain our existence, 100% of
the groceries, 80% of the cooking, 95% of the dishes, and honestly,
maybe 5% of the laundry. If she want's to trade in the Hallmark card
and Teddy Bear (that I paid for) for someone willing to contribute
more to our existences, I'll be more than willing to pay for the
classified ad to find the dupe.

I ordered flowers via teleflora.com and they never got delivered. I'm
****ed this morning. Called them and they were just like "Oh, sorry,
we'll reimburse your credit card". I told them, are you really that
stupid to think that I'm just worried about the money? Damn it, I
wanted those flowers delivered to her work. It just goes to show you,
you can't trust anybody to do a damned thing. I mean, what to hell, all
they do is contact the local florist who is on their Teleflora network
with the information. They take the flowers, and deliver them. You'd
think they could get that right.....
