Ever had a properly made pair of plastic prescription shades that cost
more than $100?

I don't wear prescription glasses (yet), but I have tried some high
quality (over 100 bucks) plastic sunglasses. You will think I am nuts
but I ride a Harley and for some reason I have never felt comfortable
viewing through plastic lenses, even the expensive ones. There is a
distortion that I just don't like. I've noticed the same thing in some
glass lenses as well, but not to the same degree as the plastic. A
well made pair of lightweight glass sunglasses provide a non-distorted
view that I am comfortable with when riding.

Glass is funny when it breaks. Especially around eyes. That's why most
schools won't let kids play sports if they have glass lenses.

I don't play sports while wearing sunglasses.

I have never heard of a fisherman on Lake Erie suffering an eye injury
because of glass sunglass lenses while he/she was fishing.

Care to provide some proof otherwise?

Buddy of mine had a near miss with a lure that ripped out of a fish's
mouth. And, you're in a moving "vehicle". Anything could happen.
Seriously - if you haven't had high quality plastic lenses, you're missing
something. You generally have to go to a small optician to get them. The
Pearle Vision / Lenscrafter type places generally don't supply them.

Fair enough. I will check them out when having my next eye exam.

Here's are two brands that have gotten a lot of complements from people
fishing the Ches Bay. http://tinyurl.com/9no7o and
http://tinyurl.com/cg8h2.

When boating, I need something that is more "wrap around" or my eyes water.
As I have to wear prescription glasses, and don't want to fork over the
$450 the optometrist folks want for sunglasses, I wear these:

Who makes a decent pair of polarized sunglasses with glass lenses? I
think
my last pair was a Sunglass Hut proprietary brand......no longer
available.

My eyes are pretty sensitive to sunlight. Any suggestions?

I have two pair - one a dark amber (glass) and one a dark gray
(glass). Both are polarized. I use the dark gray on really bright
days, but the dark amber is what I use most of the time for all
conditions - low light, middle light and dawn/dusk.

I also have a pair of shooting glasses which are dark yellow and I'm
considering trying out the new red tint which I've heard is 'da bomb
for middle light or cloudy conditions.

I got my lenses at BJ's.

Prescription or OTC?

Glass? You don't mean glass. You mean high quality plastic.

Why not glass?

Ditto. I've tried sunglasses made with different types of plastic
lenses. Seems like all had some level of distortion or aberration.
Nothing compares to glass IMO.

I agree.

Ever had a properly made pair of plastic prescription shades that cost

Uh...I had lasix six years ago. No need for Rx.

That's beside the point. I've had plastic prescription shades for 20
years.
No distortion. Perfect. And, you can get them made FLAT. No prescription.
They'll be thicker than ready-made shades. No distortion. Any perceived
difference in weight is imaginary, based on the need to complain about
something.

No offense Doug - ain't gonna happen.

Every eye is different and while your prescription may allow that,
most people don't.

Why do you think most of the major glasses outlets have a 30 day money
back policy? Because plastic lenses suck- in certain frames, they
really suck.

Glass is the only way to go.

Tom, you're right that plastic, in PRESCRIPTIONS, is not compatible with
everyone. But, I'm talking about a NEUTRAL lens - no prescription, like the
ones which some opticians install in "demo" frames. You can have polarized
lenses (or any lens) made this way. At the right places, it'll be a better
lens than SOME of the "ready-made" shades out there. I priced them once,
when my son was still a bit wild with lure handling and I wanted him in some
sort of eye protection. Ready-made shades were not sized right for him, in
terms of the frames.

Costa Del Mar. After owning two pair, I wouldn't buy anything else. Get
the mirrored amber lens.

Plastic scratches too easy. I never get a scratch on my glass-lens Costa's

Doug,
What do you mean the franchise opticians don't supply them? Do you mean
they don't supply good quality plastic lens? My wife has always purchased
her prescription glasses and sunglasses (ground plastic) from
Lenscrafter's and has never complained about distortion

Although I'm talking about non-prescription lenses here, I've heard some odd
things from friends who've gotten lenses made at Lenscrafter's and a couple
of other chains. I'll qualify this, though, and say that I have a weird
prescription, as others do, and the chains failed miserably at creating the
lenses.

This sounds like I'm now blending two ideas - the quality of the raw
material, and the accuracy of the prescription. Confusing.

That's also crap. I've had glass lenses for a zillion years and never
had one break in a manner that would ever cause damage.

On the other hand, I saw a kid take a soccer ball flat on his face and
the lenses didn't give - cut him really bad.

What cut him? The lens, or the frame?

Wouldn't have happened with glass.

???

Yes - and they sucked.

Wrong optician! I've had some that sucked, too. Then, I switched places and
the glasses have been flawless. To an extent, it depends on the frame
choice, an issue where some places give lousy advice, or none at all. I have
bad astigmatism, and I wear bifocals. The frames I wanted had a rather small
vertical measurement. The guy pointed out that the bifocal "blend point"
would have to be a compromise that I would probably find annoying.

Another issue with plastic is the introduction of torsion, however slight,
by places that don't know how to properly fit the lens to the frame. They
think tightness is the way to a secure lens. In fact, it's how they're
fitted to the frame.

The polarized Aviators by RayBan is not a bad way to go.
