Sunglasses
I need to upgrade my crappy sunglasses now that we are back into boating.
The last nice pair I had ended up in Lake Erie 2 years ago while on a cruise on our friends Lyman. Who makes a decent pair of polarized sunglasses with glass lenses? I think my last pair was a Sunglass Hut proprietary brand......no longer available. My eyes are pretty sensitive to sunlight. Any suggestions? |

Glass does not. If you wanna do polarized right, go to an eyeglass place and ask them to make you a pair of polarized shades with no prescription. |

When you do have the oppourtunity to wear corrective lenses don't settle for anything but Ziess lenses. Their hi-index lenses are the best that I have ever worn. |

A well made pair of lightweight glass sunglasses provide a non-distorted view that I am comfortable with when riding. RCE Glass is funny when it breaks. Especially around eyes. That's why most schools won't let kids play sports if they have glass lenses. I don't play sports while wearing sunglasses. I have never heard of a fisherman on Lake Erie suffering an eye injury because of glass sunglass lenses while he/she was fishing. Care to provide some proof otherwise? Buddy of mine had a near miss with a lure that ripped out of a fish's mouth. And, you're in a moving "vehicle". Anything could happen. Seriously - if you haven't had high quality plastic lenses, you're missing something. You generally have to go to a small optician to get them. The Pearle Vision / Lenscrafter type places generally don't supply them. Fair enough. I will check them out when having my next eye exam. I also have a pair of shooting glasses which are dark yellow and I'm considering trying out the new red tint which I've heard is 'da bomb for middle light or cloudy conditions. Because plastic lenses suck- in certain frames, they really suck. Glass is the only way to go. Tom, you're right that plastic, in PRESCRIPTIONS, is not compatible with everyone. But, I'm talking about a NEUTRAL lens - no prescription, like the ones which some opticians install in "demo" frames. You can have polarized lenses (or any lens) made this way. At the right places, it'll be a better lens than SOME of the "ready-made" shades out there. I priced them once, when my son was still a bit wild with lure handling and I wanted him in some sort of eye protection. Ready-made shades were not sized right for him, in terms of the frames. |

My wife has always purchased her prescription glasses and sunglasses (ground plastic) from Lenscrafter's and has never complained about distortion Although I'm talking about non-prescription lenses here, I've heard some odd things from friends who've gotten lenses made at Lenscrafter's and a couple of other chains. I'll qualify this, though, and say that I have a weird prescription, as others do, and the chains failed miserably at creating the lenses. This sounds like I'm now blending two ideas - the quality of the raw material, and the accuracy of the prescription. Confusing. |

Yes - and they sucked. Wrong optician! I've had some that sucked, too. Then, I switched places and the glasses have been flawless. To an extent, it depends on the frame choice, an issue where some places give lousy advice, or none at all. I have bad astigmatism, and I wear bifocals. The frames I wanted had a rather small vertical measurement. The guy pointed out that the bifocal "blend point" would have to be a compromise that I would probably find annoying. Another issue with plastic is the introduction of torsion, however slight, by places that don't know how to properly fit the lens to the frame. They think tightness is the way to a secure lens. In fact, it's how they're fitted to the frame. |
