Do you know anything about handguns? If you are considering just the size of the bullet, look here... mid 1980's and I went to a gun show at Norco, Calif. You could shoot any of the guns there. Was about a buck a shot for the 454 casull. Saw what it did to a steel plate, cool. And also what it did to the shooter. No thanks at shooting it. Knew a real westerner couldn't be phooled. Ah, but Harry, he's an eastern dude with known physical coordination challenges. Expect he'd crack his skull 'bout down the middle of his forehead if he touched one off...a well deserved mod, IMO. -- Skipper |

It's one thing to have a gun like that - quite another to actually shoot it with any kind of accuracy. Using full-power .454 ammunition, the Casull's purpose is close-up protection from in-your-face predators with fangs and claws. If your original intention was to land that salmon when momma grizz suddenly takes exception to your presence, that Casull will come in mighty handy. -- Skipper |

It appears ( http://www.magnumresearch.com/images/BFR.pdf ) that this handgun will also fire the .410 shotgun shell, or something similar. That may be the best of both worlds for someone who wanted a lot of home protection. The "intended purpose" (according to Dick Casull) for that caliber was hunting. In every test you see in the gun publications, the muzzle flash is enormous. In a dark encounter with a bad guy, the flash would blind you, and the second shot, which you MUST be ready for, would be next to impossible to aim accurately. You could probably find ONE gun shop owner who'd recommend such a gun for defense, but he'd probably be a descendant of the same toothless idiot who spawned you. |

The Bass Pro shop up near Bal'mer has a couple of those huge caliber handguns in its show case, and the last time I was in the store, I handled them just to see what they would be like. Anyone who lives outside of Alaska, or somewhere else "grizz" or polar bears frequent is trying to compensate for a small dick. And I wonder how useful it would be for self-protection from a charging bear. The damned animals move fast, the big handguns are very heavy, and unless you've had a lot of practice with one, you're not going to be able to fire it accurately. Here's a little snubbie for the true sportsman: http://www.shootingtimes.com/handgun_reviews/rgrRH/ http://www.magnumresearch.com/images/BFR.pdf -- Skipper |

I normally don't find Harry's barb's to be particularly witty or humorous, but this one was as good as it gets. Deer hunter...there's something inherently amusing about that phrase...a false implication of mystery, danger, intrigue, skill... Sorry...I see too many deer crossing the woods on my property to think it requires any particular high-level skill to shoot and kill one with a gun. I could use my upper level French door opening as a "stand," and shoot one deer after another from 100 yards away. You've apparently never met a good hunter who was also concerned with choosing the right ones to take from a certain population in an area. Some hunters are managers as much as marksmen. |
