Umm, you seem to have skipped a step. Let's review:

1- Wal-Mart announces higher profits.
2- When the economy is lousy, people shop downwards
3- Whatever else it is, Wal-Mart is certainly not shopping upwards.

Therefor the only logical conclusion is that Wal-Marts announcement actually proves
that the economy is still hurting (which is obvious to anybody that doesn't have
blinders on).

JohnH, you occasionally post as though you had some sense, but here you have goofed
up a simple three step deduction. How does this reflect your earlier statement that
"liberals are f***ing morons?" Are you now a liberal??

What a coincidence!

Perhaps a taste of reality is in order here, eh?

Wal-Mart's second-quarter net income increased to $2.44 billion, or 56
cents a share, compared with $2.02 billion, or 45 cents a share, a year
earlier. That result included four cents in earnings from discontinued
operations, with a gain from the sale of its McLane grocery-wholesaling
unit.

Net income from continuing operations rose 15% to $2.3 billion, or 52
cents a share, from $2.0 billion, or 45 cents a share, the company said.
The result was in line with estimates given last week when Wal-Mart
reported July sales.

Sales increased 11% to $62.6 billion, while same-store sales increased 3.2%.

"Consumer spending remained sluggish for most of the second quarter, and
Wal- Mart struggled to rid itself of bloated inventories, which had
grown faster than sales during the previous quarter. Heavy markdowns
pressured profits, and inventory at the close of the quarter was up 9%
from year-ago levels - slightly less than sales, but greater than the
company's longer-term goal for inventory to grow at less than half the
rate of sales. Comparable-store inventories increased by a
low-single-digit percentage, Wal-Mart said.

"Despite the markdowns, Wal-Mart managed to shore up profits, CEO Scott
said. The company reduced its rate of "shrinkage," or losses from stolen
and damaged goods, and continued to reap new benefits from increased
buying from cheaper manufacturers overseas.

"In addition, food margins improved even as domestic comparable-food
sales increased 7% to 9%. The company noted that sales of fresh food,
particularly at its Sam's Club unit, have grown swiftly. Fresh food
carries a higher-than- average margin at the company, noted Bill Dreher,
an analyst at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. in New York."

Not that rosy a picture.

Post a link. Otherwise you, as usual, are full of it.

Are you too lazy or too stupid to find the NYSE home page and check out
Wal-Mart?

Typical brain-dead Konservatrash..."if it doesn't have a URL, it doesn't
exist."

You continue to prove to the world what a class A asshole you are.

You're nuts. My business's capital expenditures have been averaging
approximately 4% of gross sales the last 4 years.

Any business doing 3/4 of a million and up could protentially benefit

from
the new increased limit.

I'm nuts, you're blind. Most businesses aren't as equipment intensive as
yours.

JPS, I usually agree with you, but you're making an pointless generalization
here. My company's got 26 employees. According to the Dell web site, we're a
small business. We have 14 fax machines, 2 copiers, 9 printers, 29
workstations and three servers. Staples calls us a medium business. The
labels are meaningless.

For ethical reasons, we do the bulk of our fax/printer/copier business with
a local business machine dealer because the service is unbelievable. (May be
due to the fact that while other offices give their technicians donuts, we
always have Danish from a top-notch Jewish bakery). All our computer
business goes to Dell.

Hi DSK,
I don't recall using the phrase f***ing morons, ever! Also, I did not write,
"You left out this part: "One retail theory is that when the economy is lousy,
EVERYONE shops downward one level. So, even if you prefer Lands' End t-shirts,
you may settle for Fruit of the Loom, or whatever WM sells." Someone else wrote
that.

If everyone were shopping downwards, then WM's position would not change. The
'rich' would be shopping at WM (perhaps), but the 'poor' would be shopping at
someplace cheaper than WM (they are shopping downwards too), or perhaps they
wouldn't be shopping at all.

Please note, the following excerpt is from a Washington Post article. It does
not limit improvement to Wal-Mart.

"Retail Sales Surpassed Expectations in July
Increase Is Biggest Since March
By Dina ElBoghdady
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, August 14, 2003; Page E03

Consumers spent more than expected in July, generating the biggest gain in
retail sales since March and adding to perceptions that a U.S. economic recovery
is underway. "

It seems as though you may be getting some of my statements mixed up with those
of others. I've never, to my knowledge, called anyone a moron in this or any
other group.

Regards,

John

What *did* happen to Skippy? Perhaps he tried to run that
egg-shell-of-a-boat through 3 foot "chop" at too high a speed?

Ouch, that's really cold.

Harry will worm out of the deal on a technicality, however...he never "saw
the obituary".

The rich don't have to alter their buying habits for normal purchases.
They'll shop at Macys or Nordstroms no matter what. They may purchase fewer
items if they're feeling a pinch.

More likely, they'd curtail the discretionary purchases that'd be considered
debauchery by most Americans.
