Harry,
Just between you and me, wordplay is not your strong suit. What would you like to know? "Harry Krause" wrote in message ... JimH wrote: "Harry Krause" wrote in message ... Several times today already. Actually twice, not several. You do know the difference, eh? So when did I ask prior to those 2 times today? Several has a number of meanings, but when used as a quantifier, the first definition in most professional dictionaries is is "more than one." I don't know what you know, Jim, since you keep your "profession" a deep, dark secret, but you've never provided evidence "word play" is among your abilities. -- You Voted for Bush? Why the need for the personal attack Harry? |

Gee, the first enumerative definition in the OED says (more than one). Later, it defines the word as meaning "two or three." You own a dictionary that trumps the OED? I doubt it. Even the cheap Merriam-Webster defines several thusly: 2 a : more than one several pleas b : more than two but fewer than many moved several inches Note the FIRST definition: more than one. Buy yourself a real dictionary. Most people understand that the word 'several' means more than 2 or 3 but not many. Think what you like Harry. Harry,
Several can mean more than one, but in the context you used it, it normally means more than 2, but less than "many". If you need any help with your wordplay let me know. Your argument is with the editors of the OED and with the editors of other professional dictionaries. -- Clinton and Monica; W and Iraq: Which is harder to swallow? |
