I don't mean to be rude, but there are considerable more polictical posts on
this group then there are boats. Shouldn't we stay on target and post the
polictical BS on another site?

Good luck with that. :-)

One whole big chunk of the frequent posters here post almost
exclusively about politics.
A few will mention something about a boat, rarely, but quite a few in
"the heart of the lineup" don't even make a pretense about an interest
in boats or boating.

We all seem to dabble in OT posts from time to time. Certainly I have
done so. What is unique to the internet, however, seems to be this form
of communication where people post the meanest, most vile and hateful
things they can imagine to virtual strangers in a public forum. If you
take a step back from the fray and look at what's going on, it's really
bizarre.

Are you the same guy that asked about Crownline yesterday? It remains
true that if you pose a boating question or comment you will get *some*
response, but if you want to be sure that you start a thread that will
go on for several days and extend to hundreds of posts between 8-12
participants, just mention: conservatives, liberals, George Bush, Bill
Clinton, war in Iraq, peace in Iraq, gun control, homosexuality,
abortion, Islam,... or call somebody a name.

Weird that it works that way in this group, but it does.

It's a social phenomenon that goes well beyond rec.boats. I am learning
to play the bagpipe, (or attempting to learn), and I checked out the
bagpipe NG one day. Lo and behold, one or two (unemployed ?) guys
dominate the board and spend all day posting OT insults and crap.

If I wanted to ask a question about bagpiping, I'd be afraid to do so
on that site for fear of the smart-assed and insulting response I'd
likely get.

There are some good boating NG's. hulltruth, iboat, and some others.
Sorry to say, this isn't one of them- hasn't been for the last several
years and it's unlikely that it will ever be again.

Chuck,

Yes, that was me inquiring about the Crownlines. I found some of your
write-ups on the internet (very good job).

I guess I'm just use to moderated newsgroups, where posts stay on topic or
are removed. It doesn't make sense to me why someone would post their
political view on a boat newsgroup. Seems this would only drive boat people
away and attract non boat people; kinda the opposite of what you would think
people would want...

Thanks again for putting things into perspective. I quess like everything
else, you have to take the good with the bad...

That remindings me about the American liberal consverative homosexual in
Iraq who thinks guns should be outlawed since there are used to kill doctors
in aboration clinics (did I cover enough).

Commodore Joe Redcloud

I look forward to your on-topic posts! I really do! This group could actually be
turned around if enough people started lots of threads about boats and boating,
and nobody responded in any way to political trolling.

Commodore Joe Redcloud

One of the challenges this group has faced, for many years, is that it
tends to drive away
participants who are actual experts in marine related fields. Most of
the rec.boats crew who own boats own outboard or sterndrive trailer
boats......(no surprise, most people who own a boat own an outboard or
sterndrive trailer boat...). Were you here, under a different screen
name perhaps, when Dave Brown, Peggie Hall, Bill Grannis, and others
were regular participants? One could post, (in example), "Why does my
1996 65HP Mercury outboard always seem to stall out and die a couple of
hundred yards from the dock?" and somebody who actually *knew what they
were talking about (!)* and worked on outboards
as a profession would offer a very short list of things to check. The
usual follow up posts were of two varieties:

1) The poser of the original question posting a "Thank you, it did turn
out to be debris in the vent cap of the fuel tank....."

2) The same couple of people calling names, hollering "SPAM"!, making
absolutely terrible
comments about anybody who would make a living selling or servicing
boats, and generally communicating how totally unwelcome were any
remarks from a qualified professional in the field being discussed.

The ultimate irony might be that, in some cases, a few of the anti-spam
crew post nothing but political garbage, personal attacks, cut 'n paste
liberal or conservative propaganda, and engage in years-long public
flame fests with the same two or three individuals here. The first time
an outboard motor repairman, a boat builder, or a diesel mechanic
mentions their profession in this NG, predictible voices ring out with
"Get the hell off of rec.boats! This group isn't here so you can
advertise your services!" (advertise? to a group of about 30? including
perhaps 10-12 non-boaters?) After enough requests to stop interrupting
the flaming, political posting, rival cut 'n pastes, and name calling-
most of the actual experts have complied.

Wow!!!

This sight has people with serious, serious, serious issues and they're not
boat related. Good luck to you all, reply if you like, but I'll never be
back.

Grumpy old men

Good luck to you all, you'll need. Reply if you like but I'll never be back

I don't mean to be rude, but there are considerable more polictical posts

on
this group then there are boats. Shouldn't we stay on target and post the
polictical BS on another site?

And just what is wrong with the contributions from experienced boaters
who own outboard/sterndrive trailerable boats, Chucky? Do you feel their
opinions are not worthy? Are their views less valid than yours? Truth be
known, many of these boaters you view as inferior actually have much
greater and varied boating experiences than yourself. They have traveled
boating worlds you never will.

So, Commodore Chucky, perhaps it's time you wake up and realize you are
more of a hypocritical problem than a wise solution for this NG. Can you
stop the denigration of fellow boaters? Having met you and experienced
your personal and business ethics, I rather doubt it. And while we're on
this subject, can you imagine Peggy or Bill Granis labeling fellow
contributors as "non-boaters" and engaging them in long political
banter? Can you visualize the Commodore doing so?

Back to snipping posts to completely distort their meanings, and then
picking a fight based on the distortion? You never cease to amaze me,
Dave. You lie so blatantly (by distorting what others have said) and so
openly that you must have no personal regard for truth at all. (Or you
feel that you're surrounded by such idiots that nobody is likely to
notice). I keep hoping for the recovery of your
mental/physical/emotional health. I don't know that you were ever truly
a "nice guy", but you might ask yourself why so many different people
have commented on the new, not-at-all- improved- but- defintiely-
changed "Skipper" since your return. Hint: It isn't a conspiracy,
really, it isn't.

Kevin,
I think Don was talking about you when he said the worst OT posters
don't own a boat.

Sorry Mr. Smithers.
Everyone here knows I have a Sandpiper 565 sailboat.
I believe he's questioning your mode of water transportation.

Whoops...did I get this backwards?
Anyway...my statement stands and yours is full of hot air.

We know you have a boat Don. How is it you know that Kevin has one?

Hey, Jim, he doesn't know if Kevin has a boat or not. He does, however,
know that I have one. And he knows who I am.....he's brighter than you.

Now, Jim, why in the world won't you answer my simple question to you:

Jim, how come you didn't ask that a few hundred times before you bought

an old runabout?

I did.

Obviously you know nothing of boats if you call a 1997 model *old*.

Got it Kevin? Good.

If you are speaking about yourself..... 'only in your dreams'.
Your wild & wooly stories about the Sea of Cortez outed you.

And Don proves once again that stupid is as stupid does.

Interesting that my observations so inflamed you and you were unable to

Your "questions" were based on the lie you created when you snipped my
post to claim I was stating that outboard or sterndrive boaters are
somehow "inferior". What's to address, besides your long list of
ridiculous personal responses to a lie that you had to go out of your
way to create?

I still find it very telling that you're still not able to address
directly the very simple questions posed.
