Default Stripped OutDrive DipStick

Have a Volvo SX Cobra outdrive that I over tightened the outdrive oil dipstick and managed
to strip the inter threads. The stick sorta tightens buts spins if I apply pressure.
Thought about some teflon tape. It doesn't appear to leak. This is a new/used boat to me
and I was trying to do the proper maintenance thing. Suggestions for repair would be
appreciated. Also do I risk any harm running in this condition ?

I wouldn't chance it. Water in your gear oil can kill your outdrive. Do
you know what part is stripped? Is it the dipstick or the cover? There are
4 or 5 bolts that hold that cover on (where the dipstick screws into), and
you can either have it re-threaded, or purchase a new one. I would want
peace-of-mind, and purchase a new one.

It looked like it was the cover threads,would be to simple and to
inexpensive to
have been the stick. I pulled it out after I tightened it and the
aluminum from the
cover was wrapped around the stick threads, a small piece was loose in
the hole ,which
I managed to get out. I saw the bolts you described, so I guess the
whole piece comes
off,uhh? I'm ****ed at myself as of this writing,i didn't apply that
much pressure and
it took a good bit of pressure to get it off. I really wanted to get out
this weekend,but
your making me nervous ,i thought that since its on top and its semi
secure and out of the
water that I should be ok,until I get it repaired. Thanks Larry

I was thinking about that too. You'd have to pile on the silicone to make
sure not a drop of water gets in. I know the top of my drive gets submerged
when I get off of a plane, so water could potentially enter at that time.
The other thing I was thinking about was if bits of metal fell into the
drive (from stripping the threads). Not sure how you'd get it out though.
The threads are probably aluminum, and the magnet in the bottom drain plug
won't catch it.

You could get some silicon sealer and run a bead around the plug
until you get it fixed properly.

Local autoparts store should carry a Heli-coil kit. Just get the correct
thread size and go for it. BTW, water in the drive doesn't work well.
