Welcome back Bill. Glad to hear you had a good time.

Went to San Diego for a week with stops at the daughters in Long Beach
area. On the way down, used the gift certificate for our anniversary to
take a Gondola Ride through the Naples canals. Cheaper than the Gondolas
in Venice, Italy. Very nice little mini cruise, beautiful weather, some
nice vino from our trip to Italy last October. A local wine from the
Cinque Terre made from raisins. Then down to San Diego and some fishing
from the party boats out of Seaforth Landing to the La Jolla kelp beds.
Not much catching. Some Kayak fishing on Mission Bay, little catching
there either. And a couple of kayak trips without fishing on Mission Bay,
with some fish sighted. A lot of boogie boarding the surf of the Mission
Beach area and some bike rides around the area. Watching the Sea World
fireworks at night from the house. Up to the LA area on the way home to
other daughters and a nice fishing trip to Catalina Island yesterday from
Redondo Beach. Lots of catching. Mostly Mackeral and Calico Bass. A
couple of Sheepshead and Kelp fish. Beautiful 80 degree water and calm
seas.

The beach within walking distance of Camp Pendleton is San Onofre's most
southern border.
Black's Beach is about 30 miles south of Camp Pendleton.
Both beaches are still clothing optional, if you dare to bare.
Never dared at either, but have surfed both frequently; usually weekdays
when no one is around.
That's how I know the little I know.

Hell, back in the 70's I was still interested!

The funniest thing about this beach, within walking distance from Camp
Pendleton, was seeing the Marines with their sunburned butts!

Sounds like a great trip; one I don't get to make nearly as often as I'd
like.
I lived in Pacific Beach for 12 years and I still miss it; but they say you
can't go back. It's definitely not the quiet county I experienced in the
late 70's.

Redondo to Catalina sounds great. Since you were just there, were the
conditions safe for a Sea Ray 185 (18.5 foot open bow)? I'm still trying to
get a handle on the risk:benefit ratio of this "freshwater" boat. I would
love to trailer down and make the passage.

Hell, a 30 mile early morning jog for a young marine looking for naked coeds?
Nothing to it!

Perhaps they drove. In any case they were most recognizable with their white
sidewalls and sunburned butts!

Monday was very safe, well pretty darn safe with a little sense. The swells
were maybe 2'. There was an 18' boat that flipped near us, did not see it,
but a couple of others did. Was near the Pursuit, and they rescued the 2
guys. We were near the boiler rocks, so they probably got too close. I am
going to take my 21' boat down sometime. Be prepared to spend the night at
the island. The afternoon winds in the summer, can get fierce. 10-12'
swells with 2-3' wind waves. You can either wait to later in the evening or
return the next morning. A night in Avalon is not all bad. About 18 years
ago, we were coming back on the Catalina Express to Long Beach and at least
1/2 the crew was seasick. Tables and chairs sliding around the deck.

Well, if you're going to put it that way! Who could argue.

Probably so, and in the 70's their haircuts would definitely stand out
compared to the hair style of the decade.

I've sailed to Two Harbors from Marina Del Rey half a dozen times or more,
but that's in 30-40 foot sailboats that were well-prepared for, at the very
least, coastal cruising, in weather fair or foul. I had plenty of sailing
experience in and outside San Francisco Bay so I know my limits and options
in sailboat. I know the wind patterns between SoCal and Catalina Island and
I usually have to motor for the first couple of hours and then it's 4-6
hours of good sailing for a flying finish. I'm just not familiar with how
an 18 foot runabout handles in small seas. I do know that I would make the
run in the early morning as soon as its light enough to keep an eye out for
tankers and freighters. And there sure isn't any reason to come home the
same day! A night at the island is good medicine.
