Well if a 9.9 is recommended for 7000+ lbs of boat, then for a boat under
2000 lbs something way smaller is obviously the key.

Does anyone know if a 30-35lb thrust electric motor can push a 16ft boat
around at 3kph speeds and for how long on a single battery?

As well, if we're talking gas motors, then would a 3hp trolling motor be
better?

whats your ratio of trolling motor to main engine?

Hi All,

Here's the question, I've got a 16ft boat with about a 5ft wide back
end. On it I've got a 65hp motor, and the separate mount for a trolling
motor.

I have a 9.9hp motor which I was considering using as the trolling
motor, but lately I'm thinking that it may be a touch too large size
wise, and weight wise.

What do you guys think?

As it stands if I walk from side to side in the boat the boat does move
and lean to the heavier weighted side. Mounting the 9.9 on the right
side would mean an extra 70 pounds of fulltime weight there which I
suppose I can offset a bit by putting the gas can for it towards the
left side.

????????????/ anyone had this issue before?

It's not the ratio that's important. What matters is how fast or slow you
need to go with the trolling motor, and how far. If you are talking about
a few hours of trolling each fishing day, I'd get an electric trolling
motor, which weighs little, and I'd center the batteries.

The recommended trolling motor for my 7000+ pound fishing boat is a 9.9 hp
Yamaha or something right around there. That's for slow trolling in
Chesapeake Bay.
