Cool VERY new to boating!

Hello all....just wanted to see if anyone has any experience with OMC engines. I just purchased a 17' Arrow Glass with a 4.3 Litre OMC I/O engine. The problem I'm having is with the power steering. It doesnt appear that the power steering is working at all. I've greased everything that is greasable and checked the power steering fluid levels. Is there any way to tell whether the pump is bad? On another subject, (this is really stupid), is the tilt/trim the same thing? I have a button on the control handle and another one about 3 inches away. Are these two things the same and why have them so close together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS - Why do so many idiots post political crap in a boating forum? Any way to filter them?

Without seeing it, I'll take a shot at the tilt/trim part - I'm sure I'll
get corrected if I've missed something.

When trimming the boat while your running , you normally want a slow speed
type correction to the angle of the drive in the water - small adjustments.
Thats the trim part. You'll normally have up/down trim button(s) either on
the dash or on the throttle itself for this.

For the tilt part, when launching/retrieving (trailering) the boat, you want
to get the drive up/down a bit faster for convienience. That is usually an
additional switch (sometimes even marked 'trailer', that when depressed,
gives you that additional speed when depressed.

The way this is set up will vary between boats. Normally you would not use
the trailering switch for trimming, it just moves too fast - although I once
had a Wellcraft that the trim switches failed on and was able to tap the
trailer switch to help me out. One of my current boats even has a 'soft
stop' on the trim going up - i have it adjusted where it stops at my max up
position (before the boat begins purpoising at speed) and I have to use the
trailer switch to move it any higher. But on my outboard, the tilt and trim
are the same - it moves slowly up until a certain height (angle), then it
switches in to 'tilt' mode and raises much faster on it's own.

Like I said, the implementation itself varies from boat to boat but the
basic idea is - trim for running, tilt for launching/loading.

If the set up is similar to my SeaDrive there are two pistons. one for
trim and one for tilt.

The trim setting is to adjust how the boat is plaining. Tuck it in and
the prop pushes the stern up and bow down trim it out and the reverse
happens.

You'll have to play with it a bit with just you and about 3/4 tank of
gas to find out where it should be for the best ride and economy. Once
you arrive at that you will have a starting point to work from to adjust
the trim for differing loads and water conditions.

Tilt is the more extreme raising and lowering the motor for getting the
drive out of the water and or into trailering position. You'll also may
have a trailer lock of some kind on the drive. Once the motor is fully
raised you engage the lock then drop the motor down. This takes the
strain off of the hydraulics and puts it on the hardware..

Note, I don't know if the situation is the same on your drive but the
sea drive will not raise to the point where the tilt mechanism kicks in
if the motor is turning over 3K.

I have an '82 OMC V6. The 4.3 is essentially a 350 CI V8 block w/
two cylinders lopped off. Tilt is for bring up the drive unit when
trailering/beaching. Trim changes the angle of the prop relative to the
hull while running. On my OMC, the tilt is a spring loaded toggle
switch on the dash. The trim is located as a rocker switch on the
shift/throttle. It controls the attitude of the boat under power. Trim in
(toward transom), the nose goes down. Good for pulling skiers outta the water.
Trim out (away from transom), nose goes up and the boat rides more toward
the transom vs. wetting the entire hull. Less drag, more speed, not as
stable.

Power steering.... need to look at pressure. If your belt is there, it's
likely that the pump is out. Also check to make sure it has PS fluid present.
