Default Boat lettering

It's time to name the new toy. The dealer suggested a company that does
vinyl decals. Are these better than painting? I am worried about them
peeling off.

My son made vinyl decals for my van and boat - after seven years, they're as
good as new. The manufacturer's decals on the boat are also still in good
shape (except where I've scraped them) after eight years.

I bought some custom vinyl lettering for the boat last summer and it looks
like new. They claimed to use a UV resistant "marine grade" vinyl for their
lettering, so I guess time will tell on that note...

The model decal is still almost like new on my 1986 Sandpiper 565.

Please don't paint it. If you sell the boat and someone wants to change the
name - very difficult. (Don't start telling me about the fobia of changing
a boat name).
My Eliminator - the previous owner from Texas had painted the numbers on. I
had to remove them to put Alabama numbers on. What a pain. Finally got
them off w/ an ice scraper and acetone.

Vinyl works great.

You can have the contractor put it on or you can do it yourself. It is not
hard to do yourself and may save you some money.

Be creative with your design. Anything that can be done (graphically) on a
computer can be reproduced onto vinyl. You can even create your own on your
computer, make a cd copy of it, and ask the shop to reproduce it in the
correct scale.

And don't be afraid to get estimates but make sure you compare the grade of
vinyl and size of graphics they are proposing.

After the name/graphics are applied, be careful of the edges when power
buffing the transom and you will be fine for years.

I got my vinyl decals at one of the little sign shops in a strip mall. Works
like a charm. The original manufacturer's decals aren't holding up as well!
