Aluminum prop lasts in sal****er
My boat is almost five years old and has an aluminum prop on it. I
periodically remove the prop and clean it and lube it and have never noticed any rust. Everyone told me when I bought the boat that since I fish only in sal****er I'd have to quickly switch to a stainless steel prop. Well after 5 years I'd say that they are wrong. Has anyone else experienced longevity with aluminum props in sal****er or am I just having a run of good luck? |

How many hours per year is your prop in salt water? "Basspro*" wrote in message m... My boat is almost five years old and has an aluminum prop on it. The salt water will pit it and that reduces performance a bit but if you don't hit anything it should last as long as the rest of your lower end. The main reason the people around here like stainless is it will suffer the slings and arrows of outragously shallow water better than aluminum. SS will shake off sand, mud, shells and oyster bar hits but a rock will still ruin your day. Fortunately we don't have much rock here. |

You better not notice any rust on an aluminum propeller! Has anyone else experienced longevity with aluminum props in sal****er or am I just having a run of good luck? It is a major issue for boats that sit in the water all the time. If your boat is only in the water 8 hours a week then your prop should last about 21 times as long. It is even worse for boats that are in the water all the time and left hooked up to shore power as they can develop an electrolysis path between the shore power "ground" and the water. Rod |
