Default Req info on Merc 40

Just got a Merc 40 with Thunderbolt ignition. Serial number
is 6054081. Anyone know what year this motor is?

Thanks,
Jim

PS: I know it didn't run last year and someone mucked with the
carb. Any idea what initial settings should be for the needle(s)?

This site has info on merc and omc years http://www.maxrules.com

According to this site, it's an 82 if USA - does this sound right? Maybe
different (like early 70s) if Canadian?

Don't know about the carb.

Cam,

Thanks! '82 sounds right. Even though the boat and trailer
are '82, I didn't want to assume the motor was since I want to
make sure to get the correct year manual for the motor.

Thanks again,
Jim

1 and 1/2 turn out from a lightly seated point is usually the best position
to start for the carbs idle jets.

If that's the 2 cylinder 40, I'd start it at 2 turns out from seated. Adjust
it while trolling. Screw it IN slowly to go leaner till it starts sneezing.
then back it out to where it stops sneezing. THEN back it out 1/2 turn.

That'll be real close - hole shot tells the rest.

Thanks Clams. It is the 2 cylinder. Both boat and motor need work
before taking it out. Plus motor needs a prop. As I understand it,
current aluminum prop was unsuccessful at breaking up an underwater
boulder when fishing to close to a dam. :^) In the meantime, I do
want to at least get that motor running again. I should have the
boat home by this weekend. I don't know what the current prop is
to get the replacement yet.
