I didn't think it was possible for someone to be dumber than Basskisser, but Don has done it. Be careful not to take anything of his, because the law requires him to shot you in the face. Most children learn the difference between *shoot* and *shot* when they are about 8 years old. What's your excuse? Most of the righties here have low-level language skills. It's part of being a card-carrying RepubliBORG. sigh It's not a matter of right or left. It's a matter of *belonging*. Many people today find it stylish to *belong* to one group or another, because they have no self esteem. They realize they are worthless and cling deperately to any kind of identity that will offer them some semblence of emotional support. They have no sense of self identity, no self worth. I'm not sure your posit conflicts with mine. Most of the RepubliBORG who post here have poor written language skills. Or are you saying that writing as if one were nearly functionally illiterate helps one identify with Bush... |

"Doug Kanter" wrote in message Insecurity? Just the sort of guy I want in charge of an arsenal of nuclear weapons. Insecurity in public speaking. There was a time when a man spoke his mind, and his mind was clear. But those days are long gone. Lately it has become standard operating procedure for a man to repeat what he has been told, by many others, whether he believes it or not. That is why he must read a teleprompter, to keep track of all things he is supposed to say. These men of late are hollow, they have no core values. They are easily lead by others and then are presented as mere mouthpieces, and poor ones they are. What we're talking about here is a conscience and an ideal. If a man has these things he needs no teleprompter for he speaks what he knows rather than what he has been told. How anyone can waste their time in a voting booth these days is an enigma to me. |

... "Doug Kanter" wrote Insecurity? Just the sort of guy I want in charge of an arsenal of nuclear weapons. Why in the hell do you want anyone in charge of that stuff? Let me make sure I understand which question you're asking. I think it's #1, but.... 1) Why should anyone be in charge of something nobody should have to begin with? or 2) We *should* have these weapons, but nobody should be in charge of them? |

... "Doug Kanter" wrote Regional accents are like regional cuisine and music: Without them, this would be a pretty boring country. You've been reading too many socialist newspapers. Life is boring if you make it so, it has nothing to do with anyone else. Oh boy. Socialist newspapers are somehow connected with linguistic and culinary variety? Are you talking about a publication like Conde Nast Traveller? |

![]() "John Gaquin" wrote in message ... "Doug Kanter" wrote in message .....You're talking about accents, and I'm talking about grammar. No, you're missing my point, Doug. You're attributing grammatical or structural mis-speaks to rank ignorance, but I disagree. I say they predominantly arise from insecurity and self-consciousness in [mostly] ex-temp public speaking. His recent press conference is a case in point. I saw a room full of professional wordsmiths and stand-up reporters doing their utmost to embarrass and humiliate the President of the US. These guys are all building their careers on the ease with which they can make a bad speaker look uneasy. I think we may be only a short time from the day when some petty little s#*t like Terry Moran will stand up and say "Mr. President, don't you think you were a fool to say that......" When reading a prepared text GW does much better -- still not "right-at-home", but I don't think it's a major issue. As I've said elsewhere, we recently had eight years of one of the finest ex-temp speakers ever to inhabit the WH, thus proving conclusively that the ability to speak off the cuff does not necessarily bring with it a man of character and integrity. Unless you have had occasion to have private, off record conversations with Mr. Bush, neither of us can resolve this question. Was in a room with him for a half hour (during the campaign) and spoke with him for a brief second or two. You are absolutely correct.....the moment the cameras were turned on, and the microphone was shoved in his face, he changed........even then, I recall the media types hanging around making the 'stupid' remarks. |

John Kerry was insulting to my brother who did 2 tours in country as a Seabee. Kerry came home and called the soldiers in VN: raping, stealing, killing innocents soldiers. I don't think that's true. I have looked for real quotes from him from that time frame, and while he was outspoken against the war, he did not make these kinds of statemensts. Of course, the pro-Bush campaign has spent millions of dollars to convince everybody that he *did* say things like that. Is that as good as the truth, as far as you're concerned? DSK |

It's pointless and less than appropriate to debate the VN war on rec boats.
