I can say with 100% accuracy that not all soldiers were baby killers,
rapists etc. To say that the soldiers were ____________________ because of crimes committed by a few, is a bad as saying all (insert ethnic group here) are bums and drunks, because of the actions of a few. Doug, I think you and Don have gone over the deep end, and your best left to each other. "Doug Kanter" wrote in message ... How do you know, with 100% accuracy, that he did NOT witness the things he claimed? After all, there was the My Lai incident, right? Or, like people who deny that the holocaust happened, do you not believe the reports of THAT atrocity? "John Smith" wrote in message news:MNBic.16007$cF6.641627@attbi_s04... Doug, You are correct, but Kerry should have know better, since he was a Viet Nam vet. While there were a few loose cannons over there, the vast majority were kids scared ****less, who wanted to come with everything attached. "Doug Kanter" wrote in message ... "John Smith" wrote in message news:4Pkic.11245$cF6.487216@attbi_s04... Bill, I did not know Kerry accused the soldiers of raping, stealing and killing innocent soldiers. I don't agree with Kerry, but I thought he was smarter than that. I think it's safe to say that due to tensions and emotions running high, quite a few people made blanket judgements of certain groups in the late 1960s and early 1970s, like soldiers and cops. There's no reason to think Kerry was different from everyone else in this regard. I know *I* had some unsavory things to say about the police after witnessing what the Chicago cops did in 1968. But, at the same time, my own interactions with them were nothing but good, even though I had VERY long hair and looked like someone the cops enjoyed beating on. Footnote: My WORST experience was when I was pulled over by a NY State trooper for doing 90 in a 55 zone in my screaming yellow 1970 Cougar. For some reason, he didn't ticket me. But, he harrassed me mercilessly for having an automatic instead of a Hurst shifter. My BEST experience was while hitchhiking from Syracuse to the Canadian border. Trooper pulled over. I said "If this is how my trip's beginning, I'll just walk". I turned around to get off the entrance ramp. He said "I'm offering you a ride". He asked if I had any drugs on me. I said no. He said "OK"....get in. I asked him how fast the car would go before feeling shaky. He showed me. We completed a 100 mile trip in about an hour and three minutes. Great fun. Turned out we had the same philosophy professor - he was in night school. Discussed Sartre for most of the trip. So much for stereotypes. |

John,
In case you haven't noticed, Harry is a simpleton. "John Gaquin" wrote in message ... "Harry Krause" wrote in message Bush started in New England, too. I know, the only difference between Harry and b'asskisser is that b'ass hasn't quite picked up this c&p obsession. But I keep hoping. I remember back in the sixties someone saying "if you teach them, they can learn". |

"Jim" wrote in message news:OZxhc.2126 http://www.johnkerry.com/about/military_records.html You know, the silly thing about all this records flap is that some of the records are meaningless if you don't know how to interpret them. Take the Fitness Reports, for example. In one article I read, the reporter was absolutely atwitter over the fact that one or two of Kerry's superior officers commented on his exemplary use of the English language, how generally well spoken he was, and his overall bearing and demeanor. Here's a guy who was raised in a home where English was properly spoken, and then spent most of his life at a Swiss boarding school, St. Paul's, and Yale. In the early sixties, he was for a while dating Jackie Kennedy's half sister, and was a regular, with the Kennedys, at the Bouvier "cottage" in Newport. My background was nothing like that, but I can still speak the native language of this country more proficiently than your president. Why is that? |

... "Harry Krause" wrote in message news:c6eqc6 Bush was raised in a home where English was spoken properly, attended a tony prep school, got into Yale as a legacy, was turned down by a third-rate Texas law school, and then had his way paid into Harvard business school. Yet when he speaks, he sounds like an idiot. GW is a terrible public speaker, 'tis true. But, to borrow a line from "The American President" (a lightweight but enjoyable bit of fluff from 1995), "Louis, we have had Presidents who were beloved who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight." [possible slight paraphrasing] The difference is that Kerry started in New England, and desperately wanted to sound even more like a Kennedy -- the evolution was natural. GW started in Texas, and didn't want to lose it. No amount of Prep School time in the world can remove a dose of Texas that doesn't want to be removed. That's not good or bad, that's just the way it is. With or without the Texas, GW would still be a poor public speaker. With or without the affected Brahmin, Kerry would still be an impressive one. It's an innate skill that is not necessarily relevant. The esteemed Mr. Clinton has shown us well that a glib and facile tongue doth not a great president make. Really, the worst part is that your boy is a chameleon, same as he paints his opponent. He insists on mispronouncing words which are second nature to a 7th grader in my town, so as to not alienate the dropouts who comprise the majority of his support. Pathetic, isn't it? "Look, son. That's yer presuhdent. Y'all can flunk outta school and be just like him". Remember this? "Go ahead - fail all your courses, and you can pump gas for the rest of your life". |

Most of the union guys I know, guys my age who never had the opportunities college offers and who worked physical labor for 40 years, also speak English better than Bush. And read it better, too. |

That's an insult to the rest of Texas. Are you sure that's what you want to imply? |

Yeah, well, those of us who love language and deal in it tend to admire those who are expert in using it. Moynihan was a wonderful storyteller. Whenever I attended a function where he would be, I'd be sure to hang close, just so I could overhear some of the anecdotes. Keillor is also a wonderful storyteller. If his radio show visits a city near you, try to get tickets. It is an absolute hoot. Of all the Presidents of the past 30 years, I'd rank Clinton the best speaker, followed by Nixon. Nixon had a remarkable command of language and was able to speak extem in great detail on complicated subjects. Reagan was terrible without a script. Bush senior was just average as a speaker. Carter was about the same. Gerry Ford, a favorite of mine as a person, wasn't a great speaker. I can remember Presidents going back to Truman, although I didn't really get to know Truman until the 1960s, Of all the Presidents I recall, there is little question Bush is the least capable intellectually, and the worst speaker. |
