"Nothing racist about it", and "even if he were white" in the same
paragraph. That HAS to be just about the most ignorant thing I've ever
read here!!!!!

So by saying (inferring) that Tyson is black, which he is, is an ignorant
statement Kevin?

I'm not Kevin, please go read my response to NOYB in the Clams Canino
thread. You, NOYB, Fritz, and JohnH will be the laughing stock of the
newsgroup soon. NOYB actually had a great idea, and I can't wait! But,
do you think that by referring instantly to someone's color ISN'T
racist???

Racist: discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion

Just curious, my construction manager is a negro, black, whatever. He had
the best qualifications of everyone I interviewed so naturally I hired him.
He has been with me for about 3 years. He is a pretty big guy. We are
quite good friends. He refers to us as a team, "Blackman and Robin".

Should I be offended because he is calling me a birdie name?

Well, it's pretty clear to me that he thinks of you as a girly man -
perhaps the worst kind of girly man. :)

Fe-Fi-Fo. A joke involving the way Mike Tyson speaks....not all
boxers....not all wife beaters....but the way *Mike Tyson* speaks. It was a
joke.

The joke was not racist in any way. If you made it so, that is your bad
and you indeed are the racist.

If, however, the joke offended you for any other reason I apologize. It
was, afterall, nothing but a joke.

Enough said. Fe-Fi-Fo. Get it? If not, tough. Go find yourself a sense
of humor.

Time to move on folks....the PC crowd is suffocating me.

*******

Doubtful.

Your joke was marginal. When others began suggesting names of other
African Americans to substitute for Mike Tyson in the punchline, the
thread, (as observed), became racist and the implication was that the
enunciation "Fe Fi Fo" (for the numbers three, five, and four) was
typical among people of color. Unless one cares to represent Jesse
Jackson as a punch drunk pugilist, the follow-on comments took the
thread in a racial direction.

Go find yourself a sense of humor that doesn't rely on putting other
people down, or defending those who do.

Isn't this where we trot out the Chinese laundry jokes, or the tired
old saw about
telling a running back that the football is really a watermelon?

Will we ever get past dealing in racial stereotypes, or finding then
"amusing"?

Get a life Chuck................. and then a sense of humor.

I'm mixed race and find the joke racially offensive. Down here, only a black
person or a white racist would tell that kind of joke and it is ok for
ethnics to tell jokes on themselves. Because of the color of my skin I don't
tell many irish jokes unless they are very gentle.

Unfortunately Chuck, that pronunciation *is* typical for blacks in this
area. I live in SC, and while all blacks don't speak that way, a large
number do. And most of these aren't uneducated people... I can think of
several from my graduating class in high school that required concentration
to be able to understand.

It goes on to this day. It's a *choice* made by them to speak in that
manner. It severely limits their acceptance by mainstream society, and the
opportunities available to them. You, the ACLU, and the NAACP do them no
favors by coddling and accepting their behavior, and telling Bill Cosby to
shut up when he points it out. You... the PC crowd, *are* part of the
problem.

Like any American city, their are parts of Columbia, SC that are pockets of
drug and crime activity. The Columbia Police Dept.started a "Clean Sweep"
program a couple of weeks ago to try to stem the drug activity in the
downtown area. The ACLU and NAACP were quick to swoop in and proclaim that
blacks were being targeted by the police. They called news conferences and
condemned the activities. To the local news show's credit, when they
covered this, they showed one final clip at the end. It was several black
women who were saying that they *welcomed* the clean sweep program in their
neighborhoods! They were tired of the drugs and crime, and wanted to
reclaim their neighborhood. The organizations get so caught up in pushing
their agendas that they forget to listen to their constituents. Pretty much
like the PC crowd... squashing any recognition of reality, just pushing
their blind agendas.

I'm mixed race and find the joke racially offensive.

Ok, why? It's a joke about a person, not a nationality, race or
ethnic background - why should it be offensive? The fact that Mike
Tyson is black isn't relevant - it's about him as an individual,
nothing more, nothing less.

So did you find the Wacko Jacko jokes last night funny?

Down here, only a black person or a white racist would tell that
kind of joke and it is ok for ethnics to tell jokes on themselves.

So black persons and white racists are the same for telling the same
joke?

That's pretty unique.

Because of the color of my skin I don't tell many irish jokes unless
they are very gentle.

So in your mind, the color of your skin or ethnic heritage is
important in designing the proper joke - kind of like a designer joke?
Do you find Chris Rock offensive when he does black "humor"? How
about Robin Williams when he does the blind blues singer who is
obviously meant to be black and is, in fact, very stereotypical?

Tell me - am I black, white, yellow or mixed race - can you tell? Am
I Amerindian, Lithuanian, Corsican or Cape Verdian? Do you know? Can
you tell what will and won't offend me? Can you say with any sort of
definite evidence that I will be offended if you tell a joke about
short people having Napoleon complexes?

How would you go about telling a joke in this medium that was not
offensive if you don't rely on that element of truth which is in all
humor - the differences between peoples belief's, ethnicity and
character?

There is no such thing as a neutral joke. All the best jokes are told
with social, ethnic, color or lifestyle differences in mind - that is
what makes them funny and, in a kind of odd way, instructive.

Tom

And... What about the name calling you made for those who had no comment on the

Would that classify as 'putting people down', Chuck?

Huh??

You claim that I called people names for "failing to make a comment in

I hear it's over 100-degrees back there today. Better go get some cool

No Chuck, you called *me* names and I *didn't* comment on the Jackson post!
