Default Is Lund WC-16 to fragile?

I am considering a new Lund WC-16 (their low end boat), using a 15hp Yamaha.
I will be using it on a small bay for crabbing, and general use. I would
like to have this boat around for a few years and am concerned about it
durability. The boat is rated for a max of 25hp and weighs in the
neighborhood of 270 lbs. I know Lund has a great reputation, but this is
their low-end model. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

You can't go wrong with a Lund.

Period. End of discussion.

The WC series are bottom of the line only in terms of features and creature
comforts, not construction.

I have a 5 year old WC-14 yacht with 15 hp 4-stroke. When Lund says these
boats are regularly dropped from guide planes onto lakes (empty & without
motor, obviously), they're not kidding. I beat the bejeezus out of mine. The
only thing that's come loose are a couple of screws that hold the wooden
seat tops onto the metal "boxes" underneath. Otherwise, it's doing fine.
Mine planes nicely with 3 adults aboard, but it's not fast under those
conditions. If I were you, I'd go for the 25hp motor, if you think you'll be
carrying more than 400 lbs or so.

You are forgiven.

Never let it happen again.

I had a WC-16Lund a long time ago with a 25 Merc on it and the damn
thing is still floating and the engine is still running.

I fish with a guy during the fall who has a Lund Mr. Pike - that is
one hell of a boat.

That's on my short list of "next boats". I love the WC-14, but I'd like a
floor and a bit of storage space that's not out in the open.

Discussion opened again. 15hp may be too small. My 14' light weight Valco,
would do maybe 22 with just me and with 500# of weight about 18 max. A 16'
Lund is going to weigh more, and with crab gear, a lot more.

We were just discussing the boat. :)

Always max out the engine on a small boat.

I have a 14 ft Princecraft with a 25 Johnson and it cruises
comfortable with me (250), trolling batteries (two 12V in parallel)
(120 +/-), gas tank and fishing gear (50 +/-) at around 25 mph which
is plenty fast enough for a 14 foot open boat. Max is about 28.

Without all that stuff, it has hit 35. :)

Then again, with all that crabbing gear, the point is to get there and
back safely, not necessarily fast.

It doesn't hurt to have the max power available though.

Tom

Thank you for your advice. I'm off to my local Lund dealer.
