Because the boat is listed as a "second home" on the taxes, the primary policy does not cover theft losses. A rather sneaky catch 22. The chip is not covered because the adjuster chose not to cover it. No amount of arguing could get her to change her mind. I was under the impresssion that all the boat's equipment was 100% covered. It turns out, only the actual boat and manufacturer installed equipment is 100% covered. Owner installed "accessories" are covered at a pro-rata amount. The insuranace company gets to determine the discount. I did contact my attorney, who said that there is a claim there, but by the time I pay his fees, court costs, and the 5 years it will take to chase the claim through the courts, It will cost me more then the loss I could recover. I am looking for a new insurance company. The good hands developed stickey fingers. I had some GOOD NEIGHBORS until I had a claim over twenty years ago. Of course, the STATEd amount on the FARM tractor I was restoring was disputed in court, however I won the day. The bad news it actually did take five years. The good news was that it cost my GOOD NEIGHBORS four times what it would have if they had just paid up to begin with. Not to mention the lucrative business they could have had insuring the real estate and other stuff. Later, Tom S. It's my opinion that none of the "STATES" do a good job with boat insurance. Much better to go with a marine "all risks", "stated value" policy in my opinion. At least you'll get an adjustor who knows something about boats and their equipment. |

Thanks to this thread, I called my Nationwide agent. I asked if they offer
both Actual Cash Value and/or Replacement Cost coverage. They do NOT offer Replacement Cost Coverage but offered to refer me to another company that did. The bottom line is, most of us, even though we've been insuring things for dozens of years, have no idea what coverage we really have or do not have. I had my neighbor's tree get hit by lightening a few years ago, It blew out lots of electronic items in my summer cottage, even my computer/printer etc. They covered most all of it up to the $4,000.00 or so limit of the policy. I guess I was lucky, since the losses were pretty close to the policy limits. RichG |

Sorry to here about your loss...............
having grown up in a house with a father who has been in the insurance business for 40+ years [commercial, not personal] and listening to his stories in dealing with customers, it amazes me how little attention people pay to their insurance needs and policies The best advice Dad ever gave me was to find a good "agent" company should be secondary. Find someone you feel you can trust and then take the time to sit down and discuss in depth what your needs are, and as Capt. stated CHECK YOUR POLICY. Also, don't jump companies every year just because premiums are a couple of bucks cheaper. I have been with the same co. / agent for 25 years and it has paid off the last 3. My 19 year old son had 4 accidents in 3 years. 2 his fault, 2 not. Thanks to our long relationship resulting in "guaranteed renewal status" I have not had to worry about being canceled and sent looking at non-standard [expensive] companies. just my 2 cents bc "Capt Frank Hopkins" wrote in message hlink.net... Capt.
Understood. :-) When I first started driving many, many years ago a lady side swiped my car. Just put a little crease in the right side. I shopped around for estimates to repair it. I actually shopped around for the best price, stupid me. Well I went in to her insurance company in my STATE and presented my estimates. They were ALL ready to pay the claim, the agent went to get the check book. On returning he asked what my deductible was with my insurance company was (AAA). I believe it was like $250. Well since the damage on one of the estimates was for just under $250, he closed the check book and stated that they weren't going to pay anything. Asking why, he said that my claim wasn't above my deductible so my insurance wouldn't be involved and that if I wanted by money I'd have to sue them on my own, tough. Well I learned a lesson that day, you get as much justice as you can afford. Ever since that day I'll never have ALL STATE Insurance. There, I've said it! They can sue me if they don't like it. Try your state's department of insurance. I had a problem with an auto claim
several years ago and a quick letter to http://www.ins.state.il.us/ took care of the problem in less than two weeks. The check even came with a letter of apology! The insurance companies can lose their ability to operate in an entire state if they have too many problems. I mentioned this in another post but I recently switched to Progressive. State Farm's rates skyrocketed in Florida. They even sent a note explaining the unusually high increase with the renewal notice. With Progressive, I maxed out my liability limits and I am still saving over $200 per year vs State Farms new premium. Fortunately, I can't comment on either company's claims procedures. And why did they cover the GPS but not the chip in it? Shows that the additional cost of "replacement cost" coverage might be justified. And when you find out where I can buy one of those 2 year old generators for 40% of new, drop me a line. Sounds like my price range del |

I got the same screw from State Farm. Out of $2000 in contents on the
boat, my dad and I made the mistake of telling them half was mine and half was his. They said contents were covered under home owner's policies. They then applied his $1000 deductible, and my $500 deductible, and depreciated the remaining $500 to $167. I'm now with Boat US cause they ask the value of the contents up front. It's covered under the boat policy rather than my homeowners. "Capt Frank Hopkins" wrote in message hlink.net...
