My position at work requires that I be a union member, which does not
please me too much. Our union rep was waking around today after a meeting handing out some little tchotchkes, including a ballpoint pen with the union logo on it. Like everything else the union buys, it is union made and proudly emblazoned with the logo of the union who produced it. As I was taking some notes, I noted that the pen would write a few inches then stop, write a few more inches, then stop again. I don't think our union rep was too happy when I commented, "This pen is just like the average union worker. It only works half the time." Dan -- Rosencrantz: What a shambles! What you forgot to consider......it was some money grubbing manager who
ordered the cheap ink refills rather than quality ones to save a penny per pen. |

If we can trust that his answer will not be another one of his lies,, He has belonged to unions his whole working career, he has bitten the hand that has fed him his whole working career. I guess somewhere close to 90% of workers in the US are underpaid then. And why is union membership declining? |

No need for unions for the burger flippers that are the new manufacturing base. ***************** And because many of the inequities and injustices of 100 years ago have been corrected, by unions. Even folks who despise unions and who, like most of us, work in non-union shops, would be reluctant to give up the working conditions achieved by union agitation, strike, sacrifice, and commitment over the years. We take 40 hour weeks (with extra pay for overtime), sick leave, paid vacation, paid holidays, health insurance, subsistence or better retirement upon reaching "old age", etc for granted- but few of these "perks" existed before unions pressured employers to make them a normal part of compensation. There are some corrupt unions and some unreasonable union demands, just as there are some corrupt employers or those willing to make unreasonable demands. Collective bargaining gives the worker more negotiating power to try and achieve an equitable deal from the employer. Just as employers form "associations" to set/negotiate wages for an entire industry.....(meaning, "no point quitting XYZ Widget to look for a better deal at ABC, everybody pays the same low wage")........workers need the ability to voluntarily form and/or join associations to achieve a bit of leverage on their side of the negotiation. A responsible employer offering a reasonable and competitive compensation plan, a safe working environment, and other progressive working conditions has little reason to fear that union organizers will make much of an inroad in his shop. |

Learn to read, please. I guess somewhere close to 90% of workers in the US are underpaid then. Hmm, I DO know that there are many, many people underpaid. Ask them. And why is union membership declining? The right wing whining makes people believe that unions are bad.... You do realize that before unions, working conditions were horrible, kids as young as 7 or 8 were forced to work 14 hour days, or more? There were no safety measures. |
