I thought Harry Krause's father had the record, and doing it in a 16 foot
rowboat with only one oar and no sails...or so I recall him claiming at one
point.

She has to cross the line by 0204 EST Wednesday morning - it's not a
done deal yet.

Hi Tom: I think you do not have the correct information. Ellen has
crossed the finish line and she has the new World's Record. My
congratulations to her. She is truly a Valiant Lady!

Just what I heard on the SSB net that follows her.

Ellen MacArthur, already the youngest person and the fastest woman to
sail around the world alone, has become the fastest sailor to complete a
solo non-stop circumnavigation of the globe.

When Francis Joyon took 72 days, 22 hours, 54 minutes and 22 seconds to
sail around the world last year, he was the first to do it in a trimaran.

It was generally expected his record would stand for at least 10 years.

Now the 28-year-old MacArthur from the landlocked English county of
Derbyshire has re-written the record books with her mark of 71 days, 14
hours, 18 minutes and 35 seconds.

Well congratulations to her. Setting that record is quite a feat. Just
getting to the point of starting out with a boat & gear capable of
attempting the record is an accomplishment, getting the boat around the
world without major mishap takes great skill & a tremendous amount of
work... and she gets the reward of setting the record. She deserves the
accolade!

That is excellent news. I hope she inspires more women to go for the
top tier in world sailing.

My goodness, with that and the Vendee Globe and keels falling
off...it's been a busy week for British sailing.
