Actually, from what I've read and seen of Ellen MacArthur she is totally
and completely focused on sailing. She is so intensely competitive that
IMHO she'd be a very uncomfortable person to have a relationship with...
although I would like to sail with her as a learning experience.

Most of these solo types are very focused and competitive. From what
I've read, Amelia Earhart was much the same way.

Good for her - I'm glad she accomplished something spectacular.

Ellen MacArthur has smashed the world record for a solo
circumnavigation, finishing in under 71 days 13 hours.
The previous record holder Francis Joyon took 72 days 22 hours 54 mins.

Unless you get BBC News you would never know it. The Beeb gave about half
its evening news yesterday to this and it was very, very interesting.
That boat really moves! But so far as I know, there was not a word on any
other news program or channel. Haven't checked this morning's paper yet
but if there is more than a short paragraph I will be surprised.

Agreed. A polite way of saying she's an asshole?

But Ellen and Amelia have made really outstanding accomplishments in
fields occupied by self-driven obsessives (assholes), so I think they'd
probably stand above most in that ranking. I don't know about Amelia
Earhart, but Ellen is at least polite and well-spoken (and very very
focussed)

It's an astonishing mix of technology & skill. Hard to say how much
faster these types of boats can get.

The U.S. pretty much ignores the sport of sailing. Even the America's
Cup barely gets a small blip in the popular media. I don't know why, in
many places it's very popular.

The event had nothing to do with 9/11, or other issues which give Bush's
pecker a little twitch, so it obviously wasn't newsworthy in this country.
