Default ( OT ) Bush to D.C.: You'll pay

Bush to D.C.: You'll pay

While the Bush administration has raised a record $40 million to pay for
champagne, fireworks, and marching bands at its inaugural bash, it can't
seem to find the money to help the District of Columbia cover the
security costs. According to this morning's Washington Post, the Bush
administration is planning to leave the cash-strapped city holding an
11.9 million dollar bill.

"Federal officials have told the District that it should cover the
expenses by using some of the $240 million in federal homeland security
grants it has received in the past three years -- money awarded to the
city because it is among the places at highest risk of a terrorist attack."

"The region has earmarked federal homeland security funds for such
priorities as increasing hospital capacity, equipping firefighters with
protective gear and building transit system command centers." But now,
the Post reports, nearly $12 million will now have to be spent on such
essentials as "reviewing stands."

Considering that a full 90 percent of the District's residents went to
the polls on Nov. 2 in the hope that Bush would never see a second
inauguration, it seems like poor form to make them pay so much for the
festivities. Even members of the president's own party are taken aback:
A spokesman for Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, a Virginia Republican who
chairs the committee which oversees the District, called the Bush
administration's position "simply not acceptable."

"'It's an unfunded mandate of the most odious kind. How can the District
be asked to take funds from important homeland security projects to pay
for this instead?'"

Why don't they just give no security a try? There shouldn't be any threat
from 51% of the people.

One of the thousands of reasons I'm not, and will never be POTUS, is
that I lack the proper sense of style and decorum.

We currently have a federal government spending money without restraint
(or veto) and our men and women being killed every day in a war waged
for a hideous "faulty intelligence" mistake (kinder than saying lie).
IMO the appropriate re-inauguration would be a simple swearing in
ceremony in the Oval Office, a handful of dignitaries and a few press
photogs on hand. Shirt sleeves rolled up would be a nice touch. The $45
million saved could be used to pay a few hours' interest on the
national debt.

Instead, we have a coronation ball.

It's too bad the Bushcrapper doesn't have to run a gauntlet of rotten eggs
and tomato(e)s.

The $40mm was privately raised. It is not public money. And D.C. gets
a significant amount of money for homeland security. I don't have a
problem for telling to to use less than 10% of that to support secuirty
needs of a presidential inauguration - which by the way, all Presidents
have had. The reason D.C. gets a substantial amount of security money
is because of the city's status as the nation's capital, where stuff
like inaugurations happen.

Instead, we have a coronation ball.

Which of you Bush-haters were whining about either of Clinton's
coronation costs.

And I like that touch in the article about what 90% of the voter in
D.C. wanted. I don't care. With everything the sore losers say about
red states being stupid, what may be the bluest city in country has
proved to have a lunatic electorate. I mean, what the hell have they
been thinking? The city was a crime infested hole while Barry was
mayor (it still is), he get caught smoking crack, goes to prison, and
the voters re-elect him.

My favorite Barry quote... "If you take out the killings, Washington
actually has a very very low crime rate."

But the bitching has worked. DHS says it is going to pay for a large
portion of this.
