I'm not Wilko but I can help with some insight in this area since I have been in the paddling industry for some time. Part of that time I repped for a company that sold wet suits along with many other things. The differences between one wet suit from another if very big. You can get a wide variety of thickness so one can use a suit on the summer and another can use one diving is Alaskan waters. The same goes for hoods, booties, socks and gloves. Some suite can get so thick that they are not good to use for paddling since paddlers need good range of motion. This is the simple explanation. I hope it helped. You're not me? I think there is some doubt whether he, or his buddy (Dumas?), who actually invented the regulator, even. Still, interesting character, to say the least. Once we do this our inexperience resume is considerably reduced, and our experience resume is seriously increased. That is the part of paddling that separates the men and boys. Alot of folks may think that going out to whale watch, etc. is the purpose, but I suspect that we have to be willing to develope a more itimate relationship with the water itself. Most folks are not willing to pay their dues, and decide that paddling is not for them. Enjoying the total experience! TnT |

Well Wilko, I am glad to hear from you also, at least indirectly. I
appreciate your previous suggested reading list, and it is always enlightening to consider you performing at least the one usenet stunt that you have apparently mastered - "ROFLMAO!" My only question to you would be that as many times as you have performed it since I have known you, how do you ever find a place and a way to set down comfortably in your kayak or at the computer? Maybe that is another reason serious kayakers have to personalize their cockpit padding. :-) Now regarding the list, I also appreciate your effort which I expect that KW will also need any help you can offer him, between now and Easter. Though he did not indicate what year that Easter would be, I am sure it will keep both of you busy, and out of trouble! I would even offer to help if you think that would help, though it might be one of those "too many cooks in the Kitchen" situations. Also I would not want to surprise you, but please be informed, that I told KW that I would work on the last couple of aforementioned and lastly requested request by Kw. I don't recall your name really being in the mix, however I will entertain any situation you bring to my attention. Understandably, I reserve the right to ignore your prattle, unless you choose to speak with me in a civil and beneficial fashion for myself, and other members of the group. As far as that goes even with KW's request, I am a verrrry sloooow at working on some situations, and having had the particular A..hole condition, since I was born, it is unlikely to change very fast. So please don't hold your breath on my account. I have made headway on my double posting situation, and have figured out that I needed to sign in first before entering a reply and then trying to sign in when redirected. Apparently my ISP would log on to the Google server and keep me logged in even after I left, and come back, such that when Google logged me in, I would in effect be logged in a second time, and a single post would be posted twice. That situation got more involved after the third and forth log in with subsequent posting. But I have learned how to work around, and seems to be doing ok now. So some issues may clear up faster than others. In the mean time, I appreciate reading your on topic discussions, and always look forward to your positive contribution to the group. TnT |

Water quality is another. On our streams where recreational use is seasonal, water may not always be treated before it's discharged. (http://www.chicagopaddling.org/quality.html) One thing you might want to try, fill a 5 gallon bucket with ice and water. Put quarters on the bottom. Put your arm in there, and after 5 minutes try to pick up a quarter. Hi Melissa, it is always good to hear a helpful voice of reason, and it
certainly helps my headache. I will check out the links you have shared. I am still learning about this usenet experience, and when Google bought the system, I thought it would work better. I am finally getting the system figured out and running a bit smoother for the last couple of days. I guess my question to you is what is the advantage of going through the list server, in comparison to going directly to Google. It seems to be difficult to get straight answers. You either end up talking to a robot server, or a FAQ page that you get to sort out your own question. Anyway thanks for yur help, and I hope your headache gets better. I have a lot of fun sharing the paddling experience, and regret that this foolishness gets perpetuated here. I would rather they take it somewhere else, that way we all could avoid this carnage, and pay attention to what we are really here to enjoy! TnT |

Although I wear a layer of that "sort of shirt that keeps you warm and won't soak up water if it gets wet" under my wetsuit, it's not there to prevent chafing (which my farmer johns which are cut for paddling with extra wide openings for the arms) but more to provide a more comfortable dry layer when I have to put on a damp wetsuit over it on a winter day (for example after several days of paddling which make all of my other dry wetsuits wet as well :-) ). Having a well fitting wetsuit, paddling jacket and swimming vest makes a huge difference in the comfort one has when paddling for extended periods of time. Well Kman, you are in unusually rare form today as well. I do hope the
explosion helped you feel better! Though I am wondering if it blew part of your name away. As far as the double posting issue, since it causes you so much pain, you might consider checking out the new Google gateway to the usenet. When a post is removed, you never see it again. I suspect that Google is providing this convience to promote a faster and more convient access to the discussion forum. The list services seem to be an archaic hold over from the old monolithic central server days. The postings also go through much faster. I have checked out some of the list servers where it can take between several hours to even days for the list servers to catch up with the post. I have not been able to determine what other benefit the old list server format offers, than that established usenet users, have trouble learning new processes. Even the whole idea of bottom posting and including snippits in a post, appears to no longer be necessary. Sort of like using telegraph or smoke signals to communicate, when we have telephones and television. But I realize that some folks may have trouble making that leap into the 21st century, and I will work on being more sensitive to their loss of time and effort, with my double posting, and will try to hold it down to a minimum. As to my storming off, there were no such dramatics involved, just that I was willing to move on if you were, which you apparently were not. You called me back with a question or statement, which I said I was willing to stick around for awhile longer and respond to. If you are now willing to move on, so am I, and I will restate, "As for me, I continue to move on, to enjoy posting here and else where, and to generally enjoy the whole paddling and usenet experience. Have a good life Keenan. Thankyou and Good bye, Tinkerntom" |
As a concession to you Kman, I will add this addenum instead of
reposting the above. I got to thinking more about my last post to you, and desired to clarify the "Good Bye." It is only good bye regarding the past personal situation, and I would look forward to the positive input you have regarding the paddling experience you share. I did not want you to be devastated thinking that I had signed off and out of your net life, and of interacting with you. It is just way to much fun! However, I would encourage you to stock up on the aspirin, since the Canadian product seems to have the propensity to explode which I am sure voids any guarantee of medical value. TnT |

But I realize that some folks may have trouble making that leap into the 21st century, and I will work on being more sensitive to their loss of time and effort, with my double posting, and will try to hold it down to a minimum. LOL. You scored high on the pompous scale for that one. FYI, my posts appear instantaneously. You might be surprised (because you seem rather unaware of the world around you) that everyone on usenent is aware of google and knows how to use it. As to my storming off, there were no such dramatics involved, just that I was willing to move on if you were I see. That's not what you said though. You said this: "As for me, I continue to move on, to enjoy posting here and else where, and to generally enjoy the whole paddling and usenet experience. Have a good life Keenan. Thankyou and Good bye, Tinkerntom" which you apparently were not. Thankyou and Good bye, Tinkerntom" And that statement still doesn't carry a meaning anything like the historical revisionist version you are spinning now. |

TnT Tinkerntom, I have to ask (and I realize this is personal, no offense taken if you don't want to answer) but... Have you in the past, or do you currently, experiment with Lysergic Acid Diethylamide? |
Kman, Your post show up instaneously?.. Well that is nice for you. One
lister I tried previously took several days to publish a post. Really made it frustrating to try to participate in a conversation. So I hope you can understand why I am not to excited about list servers. Even during our previous debacle of a discussion, last November, when I posted, I had to typically wait for several hours to see my own post, and I had no idea when you saw it, and were able to respond so quickly. But then I had to wait again several hours for your post to be published so that I could respond. They blamed it on bandwidth, but three to four hour lag time was hard to live with. I did check out the list server that Melissa referenced, and in their FAQ they state that due to the filtering process, there is a lag time from post to publication. There was also the fact that they were located in Germany, and a number of their functions were addressed in German. No spreckenzie Deutz! So if you have a list server that does not have this problem, I would be more than glad to check them out. I would also be glad to hear from you how else you feel that the list server is preferable to going directly to Google. So this ability to post directly on the forum at the web portal is very nice now for me. I can post, and after only a few minutes, I can see it published. I do understand, that the multiple postings would be distracting to you, if the cancelled post at my end is still published at yours. I will continue to work on not doing that. I will also use the preview button more carefully and check for spelling errors. I again realize that we all make sp errors, and I have been ridiculed by some on this forum for previous spelling errors. So I have tried to be more careful to correct them. TnT |
It is more like,
"Plop, Plop, Phiz, Phiz. Oh what a relief it is! TnT |
Melissa, I got your email, and will process.
As to last rquest, that would be fine by me! In fact, I read an article, that they are opening Gross Reservoir here in Colorado to paddle boating for the first time. The relevancy to this OP, is that they are warning that the water is very cold - 40 F - all year long. PFDs are required, but seems it would be prudent to wear cold water gear as well. Strong winds (60 to 110+Mph) can come up suddenly, generating large waves, in the canyon area which is why they are not going to allow sailing. I think that this is just a trial, and I wonder how long till someone unprepared drowns, and the management closes access again. Bummer! Gross reservoir is a very pretty, blue water, reservoir that is completely surrounded by relatively primitive lands. The only camping is primitive, and access is limited, so should be a real nice experience. I am totally looking forward to checking this area out. TnT |

Before I say anything, I have to ask if you have heard of "newsgroups" or "newsreaders." So this ability to post directly on the forum at the web portal is very nice now for me. You may think so, but to people reading newsgroups in other ways (most people) your posts often appear twice, and almost always without context (information from whatever post you are replying to) which makes it extra difficult to know what you are talking about and to whom. |
Keenan, I am glad to hear from you again, REALLY! Thanks to Melissa, I
have heard about newsgroups and newsreaders, and I expect to be making some changes, regarding how I am posting. I moved this weekend, and worked late today, so have not had time to follow through yet, so I am posting this using the old aggravating to you way, and it may hit you twice, so I must again apologize. I would just encourage you to know that I am understanding more where I have been going wrong, and I appreciate your continuing patience. Until I make these changes, I will try to refraime from continuing to post in the RBP. So please don't post anything that will set me off again, and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and its not a train. TnT |

OK :-) Thanks to Melissa, I have heard about newsgroups and newsreaders, and I expect to be making some changes, regarding how I am posting. Good luck wit that. It's really not about me, Tinkerntom. I assure you that for any others reading your posts the experience is the same. But you could save a lot of time in future by just dropping your guard. |
