Weird ....
After my last test, I logged off, then could not log back onto my DSL
service. Whatever was included in the latest Windows update download really screwed this computer up. After scratching my head and ass for a while, I finally did a system restore to the settings of yesterday. Now everything seems fine again. I hate computers. Eisboch |

Eisboch SP2 has screwed up scores of computers where I work... it had been blamed mostly on our co-use of Novell.... perhaps not... -- Grady-White Gulfstream, out of Southport, NC. http://myworkshop.idleplay.net/ Homepage http://www.southharbourvillageinn.com/directions.asp Where Southport,NC is located. http://www.thebayguide.com/rec.boats Rec.boats at Lee Yeaton's Bayguide What's weird though, is that I had already downloaded and installed SP2 when it was first released, quite a while ago. I was surprised that my update message told me that it was included in some new updates for my computer. I figured it would know that SP2 was already installed, but .... nooooooooo....... It installed it again anyway and screwed the computer up. The first time I installed it there was no problems at all. I still hate computers. Lawn mowers and pressure washers are a lot more user friendly. Eisboch |

And since SP2 has virus detection and a firewall, if you have one too, it is bad news in general. del cecchi |

Eisboch Seeing you use your computer on the boat & travel all over the place, I assume with myriad connections Mr E;.... taking a deep breath he-) .............. have you considered using one of the Linux distributions?? You can have a dual boot machine so keeping your MS windows even as the default boot if you like, then boot Linux if & when it suits you. I venture you'll use windows less & less once you see how good open source is & you'll not even know about all the online troubles MS people have. While I'm out on this wobbly limb (can hear the chain saws trying to be started, glad they're 2 strokes:-)) we use fedora2 but it's still got some rough edges, so I'll suggest starting with say the latest mandrake, it's really user friendly & has all the stuff. Till MS get longhorn finished the latest Linux distributions with the 2.6 xxx kernel are definitely ahead in the game. Anyway, everyone pays through the nose for MS then winges & wines about it when there's a free & "possibly" better alternative they haven't even tried:-) K |

It probably changed or cleared the numbers for the server you log into.
Forget where they are set up. Call you DSL people to get the numbers and where you plug them in. Bill "Eisboch" wrote in message . .. Go to www.woodyswatch.com and subscribe to Woody's Windows Watch. Any time
you see an update available from MS, wait two weeks before downloading and installing it. Read what you see in the newsletter. 9 times out of 10, they report problems with the updates and suggest you wait till MS fixes them. There's also a Woody's Office Watch newsletter. The site sends no crap mail at all. When there are no problems with updates, the newsletters contain some interesting tips. Sometimes they're hideous mistakes, but sometimes they're just annoying. At some point in 2003, they released a security update for Internet Explorer. All of a sudden, people couldn't open email attachments. The update simply changed one of the existing security options (Tools / Options / Security), but since so many people think their computers will explode if they click on the menus or read instructions, a ****load of users were stumped. The Microsoft newsgroups were (and still are) swamped with messages about inaccessible attachments. Microsoft's explanation? At the time of the update, one of the major email viruses was making the rounds. Their solution was to shut off attachments, with the hope of forcing users to think about the situation and get to know their software better. Great, but they made no announcement about his at the point of download. "Eisboch" wrote in message . .. After my last test, I logged off, then could not log back onto my DSL service. ......which is a great reason to take screen shots of those screens after
you've entered the right info and tested. Shift-PrtSc - now a picture of the screen's in the clipboard. Switch over to a blank MS Word doc or Excel sheet and hit Edit, Paste, and you've got a record of your settings. "Calif Bill" wrote in message nk.net...
