No, his instructor is wrong. In the military, he is correct - out is
used in a different context than in the civilian world.

Over and out.

10-4.

Later,

Tom

I think the confusion arises from the 'good buddy' CB users. The term might
be ok in their world but not in a marine environment.

Technically, that is correct.

Let's say that you and I are conversing. If I say over and out, that
indicates that the last transmission is yours - I am clear of the
channel once your transmission is ended.

Later,

Tom

What if I ask you a question on my last transmission?

If it requires a response from you, then it's over. If transmission
is reinitiated, then you go back to square one in protocol. If the
question does not require a end response from you, then over and out.

However, all this is mute because anybody who has ever listened to
marine VHF along the east or west coast, it's as bad as CB. :)

Later,

Tom - waiting for some CB'er to flame me.

Not in my corner of the world. I live in a major seaport/naval base and
sometimes turn on my handheld and scan 5 or 6 channels just to see what's
going on. 95% of the time it's very professional and quiet time occurs at
least 70 % of the time.
We also have a Coast Guard base here so this might encourage the locals to
behave.

You obviously don't live near Long Island Sound or Narragansett/Rhode
Island/Martha's. :)

Calling anything that far north 'major' is the equivalent of asslicker
calling Atlanta a 'world class city' LMAO

Your exaulted ruler, George W, and Ms Rice seem to think so.

Paul Schilter December 8th 04 08:27 PM

Don,
Yes he was correct. There's no point in going "over" if you're going
"out" because you possibly won't be there to receive. Example if you
switched channels immediately after your "out". But common usage is "over
and out" and most everyone knows what you mean. Sort of like on Lake
St.Clair boats don't blow their horn when passing another boat, all you'd
hear would be horns.

Our VHS instructor at the Power Squadron said......you don't say over and
out.
It's one or the other...
over .....to let the other participant have the airwaves
out........to sign off.
Was he right?

Paul Schilter December 8th 04 08:34 PM

Norm,
How ya doing? Why VHS is a standard of video recording tape, why'd ya
ask? LOL I didn't catch that till you posted it. :-)

=================================
However, you are correct. Its an improper transmission. "Over" is
an invitation to send, "Out" terminates the transmission.

Well Fritz, I hope you really had a good laugh over our North. I think
that even you could call a city that is the fifth largest in North America,
a "Major" city. That city is Toronto, Canada..... Halifax is the largest
port on the eastern seaboard of North America and it's port handles over 15
million metric tonnes of cargo every year. I would say that is "Major"
wouldn't you?

Jim Carter
