![]() "Larry Cable" wrote in message ... "riverman" Typed in Message-ID: country's laws? Even pirates were vague; one country's pirate was another country's freelance soldier. They could be hung in Spain and knighted in England. Maybe we ought to make it international law that terrorists are universally punishable by the laws of whatever country they terrorize. Extradited, and publicly tried and executed. Maritime law is pretty specific about pirates and I think like laws on terrorism would work also. You are probably thinking of Privateers, which were government sponsored pirates if one looks at it cynically. Even they were treated as pirates in any country except the one sponsoring them. Ahh, yes. You are correct; Privateers it was. Are all nations currently in agreement about piracy? --riverman |

Are paddlers being harrased by pirates? Are any of you paddlers stopping water traffic and stealing cargo or robbing passengers? Are any of you paddlers smuggling dope, diamonds, tobacco, booze, or aliens? -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ William R Watt National Capital FreeNet Ottawa's free community network homepage: www.ncf.ca/~ag384/top.htm warning: non-FreeNet email must have "notspam" in subject or it's returned |

If you do a websearch on Admiralty Law, you will get a ton more stuff than you ever wanted to know about it. One of my direct anscestors was a Privateer, Francis Drake. He was one of those good enough to get knighted for it. That's pretty cool, especially considering that Drake had no children.... maybe the lineage isn't quite as direct right back there at the beginning? :-) At least the water part runs in both your veins. I visit Tavistock pretty regularly in the summer when I'm at summer school in Plymouth; Sir Francis is a legend around those parts. --riverman |

OK, semi directly, since the only trackable lineage is through his brother Thomas. ever wonder what happened to the other 9 children in his family. The other 9 children in who's family: Drakes brothers and sisters? I bet their descendants are still living all over Devonshire and the Plymouth region. Once, on a whim, I did an 'ego search' on my and my great-grandfather's name (they're the same), and came across an incredibly thorough family tree back to Robert Barlett who came over on the "Anne", the ship that followed the Mayflower. He married a woman who came across on the Mayflower, and their family tree is traceable all the way back to Wm the Conquerer. I once calculated, at 2.5 kids per couple and at 25 years per generation, that I was related to most of the known world. --riverman |
