I have read many of Karen's articles about the Ficht and OMC's
direct-injection engines. I always come away with the impression
that these engines should not be able to survive more than a day
or two of typical use. Yet, they do.

The current Direct Injection engines from Evinrude seem to be
holding their own, and I haven't heard a tale of woe from an
owner in a long time.

No one can see into the future. For all we know there could be
piles of old 225-HP four-strokes sitting around boat repair shops
in a few years with bad valves, bad camshafts, bad oil pumps, bad
hydraulic linkages for their variable valve timing, etc.

The E-TEC engine seems quite simple mechanically, and quite complex
electronically. Simple mechanics generally outlasts complex mechanics.
Sustaining complex electronics is not that difficult these days.

By putting so much of the technology into the Engine Management Module,
it seems as though the E-TEC has the potential to carry the
two-stroke engine into new, low-emission operation.

We all know that a mechanically simple two-stroke outboard can run for
25-years. Maybe an electronically complex but mechanically simple
two-stroke can, too.

with ficht they make all sorts of silly claims with each new experiment.

To me, the latest claims confirm only one thing really, they have overly
hot combustion temps (high temp alloy pistons?? what desperation,
detonation is well established long before even the lowest grade aluminium
is even mildly "hot") which given they have endless cooling water supply
can only mean abnormal combustion, which means lean, which means heat
buildup, which means detonation.

I know this is the same old same old from me but so long as they try to
scam/spam people with their same old same old, well I'm entitled if not
outright oblidged to put the other view as I have since the beginning.
Thus far, along with help from lots of others, sadly I've have been proven
correct; poorly atomised lean mixtures at any sort of power makes for very
unreliable petrol engines, just ask the 7000 who lost their OMC jobs, the
pensioners who had their US1.3 bil ****ed against the wall, or if that's
not enough the sad boaters who got ripped off.

I suggest don't pay "extra" for a glorified lawn mower 2 stroke, worse
still an engine with unproven latest try to fix history, they should be
paying users as part of the testing program, which I'm more confident than
ever will prove yet again that the failure rate will be too high for
commercial consumer usage.
