Default electrical question

I have a 1979 Mercury 70 hp outboard. I need 12v power to power a trim/tilt
gauge, so I need it to be hot only when engine is on. What's the easiest
way to do this? There is a rubber plug on the front of the control box that
has three slots ( looks like a small plug outlet).
Is this possibly 12v out of the control ? If so, is there a plug available
to fit this?

Thanks,

Tom Creech

It's for the tach.... but the 12v lead out of it might be switched. Check it
with a meter - it may do.

Tom - I just wired my T/T gauge to the back of the tach so it'd only come on
when the tach comes on - which is when the ignition is on. I can't
remember without crawling back there and looking, but I might have "daisy
chained" a couple of them. I don't know if this is right, but it works.

It is switched. I use it to power a block that connects to a 12v plug,
my dash lights and my fishfinder. I also installed a Amp meter and
Voltmeter to make sure I wasn't using too much juice for the engine to
recharge, and I wasn't.

You should be set.

I can provide pin-out diagram of the rubber connector if you'd like.
Just email me. I used standard spade plugs to plug in to the rubber
part BTW.

Thanks guys,
Sure enough, the rubber plug on the front of the control is switched 12V,
and a spade clip fits nice and snug.

Thanks again,

Tom
