There is a procedure and you might find it online. It's more complicated
than I'm going to try to type. The service manuals like clymers, etc all
have it. You're right that it may be your problem. Alphas have an ignition
interupter switch in the cable plate that 'stalls' the enginie for a second
to let it come out of gear when you shift to neutral.
