Default how to adjust cables from alpha 1

Hello,
I'm Richard from Amsterdam, Holland. I own a 1990 boat with a Mercruiser 3.0
Alpha One. This season is happens when I shift the gearhandle to "return"
that the engine starts to run slower and stops.
Forward is fine, no problem. I think that one or two cables are no more
right adjusted. Maybe they lengthed up a little bit. The problem did not
appear from one day to another.
Just turn the stationair-skrew is not the solution because shifting back- or
returnwards "bangs"

Can anyone tell me -generally- which cable in what order should be adjusted,
and how

Thanks in advance,

Richard Reijnders

There is a procedure and you might find it online. It's more complicated
than I'm going to try to type. The service manuals like clymers, etc all
have it. You're right that it may be your problem. Alphas have an ignition
interupter switch in the cable plate that 'stalls' the enginie for a second
to let it come out of gear when you shift to neutral.

Wow... This might be what's happening to me too.

Is there a way to disable this stall device?

If I have hte engine at 1 or 2 K rpm and then put it in nuetral -- it dies.

It'd be nice to disable that device to see if it "fixes it" so I know where to
attack it.

If you disable it you will find it very hard to pull out of gear. The
switch is located on the shift plate. The shift plate is where the the
cable from you shifter connects to the cable going back to the outdrive. On
v engines it's usually on the riser. It is the only sicth on the plate. It
is connected to the ignition and just interupts the ignition for long enough
to relax the turning pressure on the gear set. It needs to be adjusted just
right to work properly or you have a stalling problem or a problem getting
out of gear.
