Default Restoration of Fibreglass Paint

I have recently acquired 1987 24' Fibreglass boat. The hull is primarily
white with maroon accents. Whereas the white hull is in good condition and
pleasing to the eye, the maroon colour accent stripes appear to be badly
oxidized and generally detract from the appearance of the boat.

We are interested to know what product(s) available in Canada are
suitable/successful for removing oxidation and restoring the colour as much
as possible. In fact, is this even practical?

Unlike paint, fiberglass gelcoat is a very thick layer, with color
throughout. It can be made to look like new once the oxidation is removed.
Mechanical removal with progressively finer grades of sandpaper is one
option, chemical cleaners can also work well- both of which should be
followed by buffing and polishing. Just be careful not to go all the way
through the gelcoat- although it's much thicker than paint, it's still
possible to go too deep.

I used a cleaner with Oxalic Acid to remove some light oxidation and stains
from my gelcoat. Vertglas is a very good gelcoat restoral product which
should be available via internet mail order to Canada.
