To be fair, jim, you did alter the context. You deleted that portion of the
second sentence that reads "...but they are trying too hard to win election
votes by fear, and it's backfiring..." That deleted portion serves as a
modifier to the first clause of the sentence, which you quoted, and its
deletion alters the overall meaning of the sentence. Sorry.
