Hour meter on engine?
I ran into someone else on the river today.. at the marina actually... who
had a sea ray a few years older than mine.. He made mention that sea ray started putting a USB port in their engine compartment a few years ago that read the hours on the engine with some device that the dealer would have.. Has anyone ever heard of this, or is this guy smoking crack? -j |

I believe all of the later model Merc engines that utilize the computers have this ability. I think anyone w/ a Merc scan tool has the ability to get this info out of an engine. I know of people that have this done to used boats when looking to purchase it to verify engine hours. I also heard from a reliable source that they could tell how the boat had been driven with this option too. Can't pretend to verify this though. Buck |

Many up to date ECU's store hours the motor ran at certain rpm ... a very useful feature when buying a used motor. Matt |

Hour meter on engine?
It's in the ECM and similar to the OBDII port on modern autos, only instead
of a universal code reader it requires a Merc scanner. It is not a USB port. Engine running hours (as opposed to key on engine off) can be accessed along with a lot of other data. I would urge anyone looking to purchase a used boat so equipped to have the ECM dumped to check against meter hours......since it's pretty easy to put whatever hours you wish on a new meter and swap it out. Hour meter on engine?
Mercruiser has an electronic engine management device called Smartcraft.
As well as monitoring all engine attributes, it can also can handle fuel flow, rudder and trim angles, bilge ventilation, fishing data, and GPS as well. It does have a proprietary (4800 baud) serial plug in socket ( not USB), that a scan tool can be hooked to, to retrieve different engine histories. I don't know how much RAM it has, so I don't know how much history it can store, but it does record life maximum RPM, speed, and temp. -- -Netsock "It's just about going fast...that's all..." http://home.insight.rr.com/cgreen/ "jay" wrote in message ... Could the ECM scan device apply to 5.4l 1985 Mercruiser engine to retrieve
engine data? Regards, "Netsock" wrote in message ... Mercruiser has an electronic engine management device called Smartcraft.
