I bought and installed these about 15 years ago. They are a pain in the ass with the tiny screens built into switches that no one really has the eyesight to see. So, I saw and bought a couple of replacement switches that are controllable by iPhone, ALEXA, whatever. Easy to install, easy to read screen on the iPhone or other device. Work via wi-fi. Despite my innate klutziness, I installed each switch in about 10 minutes and once I installed the app on my iPhone, I "programmed" then in a couple of minutes. Came on at 5 pm and shut off at 6 am. Hot damn. There are many brands of these switches available on Amazon. The cheap ones all look pretty much alike and of course they are manufactured in China. Mine were $12 and change each. -- *Lock Trump Up!* You are probably the last individual in the group to embrace this technology. Hint: program them to come on at dusk. I applaud you for challenging your inate klutziness. Keep up the good work. I might be. The timers I originally installed worked ok, but were a pain in the ass to reset if I wanted a change, but not enough of a pain in the ass to bother changing them. I stumbled across their replacements while searching for a couple of three-way switches. Timers always seemed to fail. I installed LED a porch light and deck lights that have dusk to dawn sensors. Deck lights I just turn on the switch when I need them and if dark they turn on. Porch light the same, but always on switch. Why screw with wifi **** on simple stuff. That's what I've got. Work great! We have a light in the park pavilion in the neighborhood and they screwed with timers for years. As part of the things I got tasked with, that light was part of my job. I guess nobody actually figured out sun up and sun down change throughout the year and a power hit screws it up entirely. They kept telling me a photo eye would not work on the T12F40 fixture. They tried. I bought a commercial unit (ballast friendly) for dusk to dawn and it has been chugging along for about 5 years. Next time the lamps fail, I am going back with LEDs. The outside lights at my house are all on motion detectors (About a dozen zones). They are maintenance intensive but I found out a sun shade over the ones the sun hits extends their life tremendously. A piece of aluminum "coil" installed like the brim on a ball cap does wonders. |
