Perhaps if you go south west towards Arkansas or Oklahoma it might get a bit more southern. Crikey. Thought you went to a fancy prep school. Missouri was a slave state during the Civil War, if not a Southern state. Dred Scott was a black slave in Missouri who was taken by his "owners" out of the state and into the territory, which had been designated a free territory by the Missouri Compromise. Scott was taken back to Missouri, where he claimed he was now free because of his time in the territory, A state court ruled against him, followed by a federal court, followed by the Supreme Court. I had a college buddy from Cape Girardeau and visited there several times. It had the mindset of an old Southern town. They had slaves in PG county too, what's your point? Neither were part of the confederacy. And they were not freed by Lincoln’s proclamation. Maryland didn't outlaw slavery until very near the end of the war and enforcement was spotty down where Harry lives. |
