When you consider how our "friends" have been treating us, sometime it

I am not sure this Korean deal is going to work out as well as
everyone hopes but at this point any improvement will be more than the
last dozen presidents have done. It would be a huge step forward if he
could just end the Korean war. That war is old enough to be on
Medicare.

Harry knows nothing of military exercises. By 'giving them up', we are
saving a whole potfull of
money. Their biggest effect was showing off to the North Koreans. We
don't need to do that.


Plus, those in the left are acting as if Trump has cancelled military
exercises with South Korea forever.Â* He never said that.Â* The exercises
are a bone of contention with the North and he has canceled them for the
time being in a good faith gesture to further the possibilities of a
to be negotiated formal agreement with the North.Â* If those negotiations
fail you can betyour ass the exercises will resume.

That brings up another point.Â* The comments I am hearing from the left
make it sound like the "agreement" that was signed is the end of
discussions.Â* It's only the opening sentence in any negotiated deal
that is made with North Korea.




No comments I've read or heard indicate the short meeting and signed

Trump is focusing on the future, not the past.

The immediate media reactions to the summit meeting is extremely
interesting to me. I am far from being an expert in these matters but
one thing really struck me based on my limited experience in
business meetings and/or negotiations with representatives with some
Asian companies.

Watching MSNBC this morning, all the discussion is about how "loose"
and undefined the agreement Trump and Kim Jong Un signed. They
are focusing on the lack of specifics and timing of North Korea's
actions, dissecting the agreement.

Americans tend to want to get right down to the nuts and bolts of a
contract and hammer out all the terms and conditions so they can be
documented in a legal document in the form of a contract, and the
faster it can be done, the better.

The culture in Asian countries ... and my experience is limited to
Japan and China ... is very different. Much more time is spent
initially in getting to know each other down to some of the personal
and family aspects of the people involved in the project. I remember
back in the early 80's the company I worked for at the time was
entering into a major contract with a company in Japan. The Japanese
company (Ricoh) sent a delegation of engineering types, project managers
and contract specialists to spend a week at the company I worked at
to work out the contract. The owner of my company hired a consultant
to come in and brief all of us who would be involved in the discussions
regarding how the Japanese business culture worked and what to expect.

The meetings went exactly as he described with pretty much the whole
first day being spent on who we all were, our families, our hobbies
and personal interests, etc. Not a peep about the project until after
a day or more of personal interaction, dinners and social meetings
in the evenings. Only after all that did we get down to discussing
the project.

It was a very similar experience when I went to China in 1986. Met
with several companies representing different industries over the
course of a week and a half. Very little was discussed about specific
applications for the technology my company represented. It was more
of a personal "interview" and, in the case of China, was very
ceremonial. Local political leaders often attended the meetings
and much time was spent with them honoring their "guests" (me and
another guy who went with me) at nightly banquets given in our honor.

It was only after all this personal and ceremonial meetings that we
actually got down to discussing the technical and contractual issues.
The purpose, I've been told, is to develop mutual respect and trust so
that in the execution of the contract, details that were not documented
or overlooked could be worked out in a trusting and mutually respectful
manner.

I don't know if the North Korean culture is similar (or even if it
still exists in Japan and China anymore) but if so, I can understand
how Trump is approaching this. It's too complicated to document every
single nut and bolt of the intention of an agreement. Plus, the
"contract" hasn't even been developed yet.

and (predictably) are being very critical of the very early discussions
Trump and Kim Jong Un had as if they were supposed to work out every
nut and bolt.


If this was any previous administration, they would still be arguing
about where they would meet, have another month or so of discussion
about what they would say then spend a month deciding on the shape of
the table.
You have to give Trump some credit for just getting the ball rolling.
If he doesn't say or do something stupid until they can meet again, we
might actually see some progress in a war that has gone on as long as
most of us have been alive. I was 5 when it started.

I wonder if Trump is aware that Kim had his uncle Jang Song-thaek killed
and his half-bro Kim Jong-nam assassinated, or that Kim and his regime
are considered among the worst, if not the worst, violators of human
rights in the world. And if he is aware of this, I wonder if Trump
admires Kim for that.

I guess you're right. Better to increase sanctions causing the people
of North Korea to suffer even more and deploy more battle groups off the
coast of North Korea with threats of wiping them off the face of the earth.

But, I didn't think you liked that approach either. Hard to please.

I think it may be time to de escalate our military posture there a
little. It is clear we are not scaring the guy, even though he should
be scared.
I doubt we will ever totally denuclearize North Korea but if we can
get him to understand MAD and peacefully join the nuclear club, he can
be at least as welcome as India, Pakistan and Israel. (where the
biggest chances of nuclear war are)
