Amen. Crossed the border to visit Montreal while on a motorcycle trip.
Had to unpack the entire bike
at the Canadian border to show we weren't carrying weapons. Another
time was questioned and
threatened with searches for a good 15-20 minutes at the Niagara Falls crossing. Unreal.

My guess is an attitudinal thing...my experience at the Canadian border
is that "friendly" works in both directions.* If you are by nature
snarly about what the government does and is doing, and the border
federales suspect that, you're going to get the FlaJim/John Herring
treatment. Makes me smile.

* I once left Canada with a box of Cuban cigars, about 25 cigars, tucked
into the trenchcoat I was wearing. They were stashed loose, in their
aluminum tubes, outside of the cigar box, which was empty and in my
luggage. The U.S. customs guy said, "Those aren't explosives, are they?"
with a grin. "Nope, they're Cuban cigars for a friend," I said with a
smile. "Want one?" We both knew they were "illegal." He didn't give a
**** and sent me to board the plane, *with* the smokes. If I had
FlaJim's or Herring's attitude, I'd probably have been arrested.

Many, many years ago, in the 1970s, I wrote and was directing a
30-minute "industrial" movie for a client on the architecture of Louis
Kahn. We were featuring some of his newer "state" buildings in Dhaka,
mainly the national assembly building. We had rented a lot of camera
gear from an agency in Paris. We knew we'd have to "pay" to get the gear
into the country in the form of bribes to the border guys. Cost $250
'Merican. Cost me $5 a head to clear the native squatters out of the
eaves of the buildings we were shooting. Smiles and bribes go a long way
in the third world. ****ty attitudes get you nowhere, except, of course,
in rec.boats, r

BS. I was friendly, reported no guns, in way to Alaska. They pretty much
went through everything in the camper. I even mentioned that for $60 bucks
I could legally bring in a long gun. Still an hour spent being searched.
I have brought the boat in on a trailer with no problem a couple times.
Maybe I am in the system as legal.
