Just in time...we were drafting legislation to ban disruptive non boaters from the group. ;-) Had a great time yesterday . Put 3.25 hrs on my break-in schedule touring the North West Arm, harbour, Eastern Passage area and the Bedford Basin. Only 8.75 hrs to go and I'll have my full 20 in. A boat with a straight Chevy 6? Really? How interesting. That was the engine of choice for Mercruiser for years. There are a ****load of 18-22 foot I/Os with the 6 cylinder Chevy truck engine in them. |

- show quoted text - Yeah, I know. It was interesting to me because I wasn't aware I/O manufacturers were still using that engine in current production and, of course, they aren't. I wasn't aware Herring bought a used boat. "One of my dad's trucks from the early 1960's was a Chevy with a straight six, and it ran reliably for a long time." Surprising that the old in line four MerCruiser 3.0 is still available in 2016 boats. Guess there is a warehouse full of them somewhere. I was a bit concerned about the old technology but it runs fine except for being a bit rough idling when cold. Almost wish it had a manual choke. We sure are spoiled by EFI. |

I think there's a conspiracy to do away with manual chokes. I never had a problem starting lawn mowers with a manual choke. The new ones, without the manual choke, are supposed to start on the first pull. I've seen several that won't start on the tenth pull! The absence of the manual choke has been a boon to lawn mower repairmen. |

Don I think your 3.0 is EFI. Or throttle body. Not sure. I think carbs are all a thing of the past now. Is yours raw water cooled or have a separate cooling system? |

![]() Tim sez.. "Don I think your 3.0 is EFI. Or throttle body. Not sure. I think carbs are all a thing of the past now. Â* Is yours raw water cooled or have a separate cooling system?" I have the TKS version (turn key) and remember the salesman saying the carburetor was a good thing on the 3.0 motor. It also has seawater cooling. Good on lakes...maybe not so great in salt water. I flush and rinse down the boat and motor everytime out on salt water. |

Ok. Maybe carbs are still available. I know a buddy has a 4.8 v6 that's 6 years old. It's EFI. And enclosed cooling.

Here's the newest gasser I could find: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercruiser-1...25.m3641.l6368 New 2.5L Diesels are still being sold: http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts/850324.cfm But, that's out of the price range I might consider for my boat. |
