We grazed by this on another thread but these days there really does
not seem to be much old time country music. It has evolved into pop
singers like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. There are a lot of
guys doing things in the vein of the Eagles and other soft rockers
from the 70s and 80s. Then you have guys like Colt Ford who have a hip
hop sound, rapping songs about waving the flag and celebrating rural
living instead of killing cops and abusing women like the original
rappers.
We saw Colt Ford this evening at a free open air concert in Bonita
along with a couple local bands and a "Voice" runner up (Rae Lynn).
The interesting thing is all of my old 60s Motown dance moves still
work with his music. The beat seems to be very similar.
One thing about country is there does seem to be a lot of music in
their music. It has changed from the old "twang and trains and hill
billy thing" (Trace Adkins line).

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith said it best. "Country music is the new rock and roll".

That is really true. Since Lynert Skinnert and that sound, they are
edging over into the rock and roll side of things. It is not like the
Europop sound or the Seattle grunge/punk stuff.
What sells as country is about as broad a category as you can get tho.

Country music has the same problem any other popular genre does...
Record labels are looking for songs with gimmicky hooks that will grab
people and sell a bunch of singles on iTunes. The "old" style of
country, which is basically telling a 2-3 verse story doesn't appeal to
a lot of younger people who have no attention span.

You DO see some of them trying to mix the old and the new sound...
Like Blake Shelton.

What's funny (and ironic) about Keyser's comment is that one of the
more "traditional" sounding current artists is Darious Rucker.

Country is certainly where the money is, although it is not your
daddy's country music. The highest earning woman in the music business
is Taylor Swift. She is not really a country act but she calls herself
country. I am not a big fan of her music and she is really not that
pretty (she had to buy an ass) but she sure is a good businesswoman
and that impresses me.

Wish you hadn't said that. I'll never look at her the same. Damn.
