Way back in the 60's the Canadian Navy developed the 'Bear Trap' system to help land the old Sea Kings on our destroyer escorts. Helicopter lowered a cable that was attached to a winch in the middle of the flight deck and the helo was slowly reeled in. The two DE's I was stationed on in the Navy had been equipped with an early, remotely flown "drone" helicopter known as "Dash". It was intended for anti-submarine warfare but, being early in the remotely controlled aircraft days, had a few problems not limited to taking off, heading out and never seen again. The program was dropped. |
