Actually, there are lots of people concerned about the privatization of prisons. The practice is full of abuses, and should be abolished. We incarcerate a larger percentage of our population than any other modern western country, and for longer terms, too. This is an offshoot of the private prison phenom... It is immoral to create new crimes and incarcerate more people for more time in order to meet contractual obligations of a for-profit prison. Of course, raising this sort of issue in this bastion of right-wingedness is an exercise in futility. Are you really suggesting that new crimes are created just so we can incarcerate more people? I'm suggesting that accommodations are made to help private prisons maintain a high occupancy rates. State legislatures in a number of states are eager to kiss the asses of private prison corporations. You are starting to sound like Scott. Conspiracies galore. It's not a conspiracy. It's quite open. It's been documented in news stories. Here's a news story that mentions the deals private prisons get to keep occupancy high: http://tinyurl.com/m9edbdw How do you feel about Bernie Madoff? Maybe we should petition to have his 150 year sentence reduced. I mean it's not like he directly killed or physically assaulted anyone. Maybe if he says he's sorry to all the people he screwed out of their life savings they will forgive and forget. A 150 year sentence for a non-violent criminal is absurd. -- If right-wing assholes could fly, rec.boats would be an airport! |
