Default Biting the bullet...literally.

Grrrr.

Bought six boxes of 50 rounds each of Blazer .357 MAG ammo, at $19.99 a
box. Grrrr. Twice as much as it used to sell for before the crazies
started hoarding ammo.

This is the Blazer aluminum case ammo. Not reloadable, which is not an
issue for me, since I don't reload.

What the hell. You're rich, with multiple yachts. I do not remember
paying only 10 bucks for 357 ammo. But I do reload, and shoot little.

When I started shooting 9 mm, it was about $7.00 for a box of 50 count
target ammo. Maybe $8.00. 40S&W was a little more. .357 MAG was about
$10. 100 .22LR Mini-Mags were about $4

Why reload if you "shoot little"?

I tend to agree but back in the olden days people reloaded because
there was not much in high performance ammo loaded commercially. Now
that is not really an issue in the popular calibers.
You can still load a performance cartridge for about 50 cents less
than a commercially loaded one.
It still might make sense in rifle calibers too.

Other than that, reloading is a way to shoot relatively cheap if your
time is worth less to you than your money and you don't mind cast
bullets.

Keep in mind that 'when I started shooting', for someone with Krause's knowledge and experience, was
probably about 45 years ago. Ammo was a bit cheaper then.

A box of .38 or .45 was around $6.95 in the late 60s, early 70s when I
was shooting a lot. That was the retail price. I got a much better
deal at the distributor in Lanham when I was buying a pallet of
shotgun shells for the skeet league but I needed to buy a case.
I split a case of .45 a few times. I seem to remember that was 20
boxes.
The real deal was .22rf by the case (20 bricks). They were less than a
penny a round. We split a case between 4 of us and I bet some of the
guys still have some ;-)

This thing came in the mail a couple weeks back. Got it for a grandson soon, I hope, to make Eagle
Scout. Plan to get it engraved, appropriately, when he does so.

Haven't been successful getting any .22lr for it at my local WalMart, but there's no big rush.

The way it works here is that you have to make friends with the
manager of the ammo department. If he's so inclined, he can tell you
when the next shipment is going to be brought out and what is in it.
At our local store that is typically 7:00 AM on Thursdays. Guys
start lining up about 5:30 or so and most of the ammo is sold right
off the cart before it gets to the shelf.

I'll have at least six 50-round boxes of .357 MAG ammo here by the
beginning of the week, and I'm still shopping for a few more boxes of
..38 Special. I don't like the prices, but if you shop a handful of mail
order sites/spiders, you at least can find the lowest of the rip-off
prices. I'm not a hoarder, so that amount will do for a while.

I did buy a lot of .22LR CCI Mini-Mags when they were cheap. In addition
to what was in my ammo box, I found six mini-cartons in the basement, so
I probably have around 5,000 rounds of decent quality
..22LR ammo on hand.

Now that there are signs of the weather warming up, I'm planning a trip
out to the river to shoot up empty cans, bottles, and zombies.
